Personally, I could care less about the absolute limit the engine can take when talking spending amounts exceding $50k to get 1000+ hp.

Point is, if this info holds true, this car will be awsome! a 2850 lb car with 260hp/260 tq roadster that looks nice and hanldes decenlty for 25K ish will be loads of fun!

Of course there is [honda fanboi]Oh but it doesnt feel as nice, or doesnt handle just as nicely[/honda fanboi] or, [american fanboi]torqueless wonder what! solstice will be faster in the straights fool[/american fanboi]

Hopefully this wil up the market for more competetive higher horsepower roadsters, the //M version Z4 would be nice to see over here, small rumors of a 290~hp redisigned S2000, maybe Dodge will come out with the Razor they've been dancing around these last 3 years. Regardless, this car will be loads of fun and I can't wait for it to come out and drive!

I think the one thing that has not been mentioned much is the torque that this GXP will have 260 lb ft. That kind of torque in this kind of car will be a blast to drive and will probably be much quicker than the S2000 .What am I missing here? I smell jealousy and envy here rather than excitement and enthusiam. I love the S2000 as much as anyone else but, how can a true car enthusiast have anything bad to say about the 260 Lb ft and 260 HP Sol GXP.

The fact that it is capable of this much even modified speaks volumes of the effiency of the head design, thereby disproving any notions that the GM cannot design motors.
From here.

Some of Lotus Engineering's work may come as a surprise to you. Did you know, for instance, that many of General Motor's Vauxhall/Opel ECOTEC (which stands for Ecology, Economy, and Technology) engines, as fitted in the Corsa, Astra and Vectra vehicles, were developed by Lotus Engineering?

Warranty , reliability, maintenance, cost...Wheels, tires, trans, diff, tuning, blown motors, Cost of a boosted S2k adds up quickly.

I remember hearing something from automotive journalists while I was @ NAIAS, SEMA, and IAS that the ECOTEC motor was initially designed for Honda but since Honda further developed their motor the engine was scooped up by GM so the high standards must be there because of Honda

How many methanol-fueled FI 4-cylinder race motors exist? Very few. Most are still running gasoline.

That alone puts the Ecotec motor in a new (mostly unchallenged) class.

You may not be sure of those Supras being daily drivers and reliable, but the point is that they aren't race motors that need constant rebuilding (and they're still streetable!).

I have no problems with GM being up to snuff. As I said, you're barking up the wrong tree. I have no issues with GM - you can search my posts and you'll see that I don't bash them or try and tear them down and lift Honda up (or any other manufacturer). I don't like 90% of their vehicles but I really like the other 10%. I just take issue with you raising them up to a stratospheric level where nothing is really relevant, then bringing it back down to every day level and trying to make an equation. It just doesn't work.

Could've. Should've. Who cares, if they can't get it right on the street? It's a waste of engineering time to build massively powerful race motors if you can't stay competitive on the street. I don't drive a race car - I drive a street car. When I walk into a showroom (about every six years, if not more), I'm not caring how good they race - I'm caring how good they build a street car.

That's why I'd gladly buy a Vette, CTS-V, GTO, or a pick-up....but never an Impala, G6, Malibu, Cobalt, and the like.

I think the scope of our argument got expanded too widely. I originally just wanted to point out that the Ecotec motor had good potential and quiet people who didn't respect Chevy simply b/c it was a Chevy.
