As most of the FD owners will tell you, "Buying the car is the cheapest part!" If you want a reliable RX, go for the FB or FC to put some money into it and it will give back. With the FD, you put some money into it, get ready to put some more in... You can get them looking nice, but they will cost you a lot in the long run.

I agree with you completely. I went to a subaru meet and one guy kept ranting on and on about "rotary this" and "problems that" about my car. Fact of the matter is, most people talking about them like that have never owned, nor have had any experience with rotary engines.

The myth is bigger than the machine in some ways. On a daily basis, they can be tempermental with flooding, but in reality, a non modded engine will last a long time.

Plan on spending about 6k on it the first year. 2-3k every year afterward. And keep 5k laying around for the next engine. But when it runs right it will be the most enjoyable car you have ever driven.
Hah. That's almost exactly what my spend rate was on my FD (I was on my third motor when I sold it). Looking back, honestly? It was still worth it... for a few years.

And RX-7s with V8s are just wrong. Plenty of practical sense, but half of the magic of the car is that wonderful, insane rotary. A proper 7 should be popping licks of flame from the tailpipe on throttle lift-off.

For any 10 year old car, you should budget $2k for repairs imo. This is about what I've spent annually on every +7 yr old car I've owned, whether it be German or Japanese.

Really? What kind of cars have you been getting?? I have 4 16 year old cars and I've spent less than that on purchase + repairs in the past 4 years...

3 of those cars are old 240 volvos, the other is a 1990 civic.

Porsches, Audis, Nissans, Subarus, RX-7s... one or two things broke per year in the Gemran cars, and that would be a $2k bill. The RX-7 would have one thing break, but it would take the mechanic two tries to fix it - if you have an old RX-7, you need a knowledgeable mechanic or do the work yourself (something I learned) - not many people understand rotaries.

Even if I didn't spend $2k in a particular year, I always had it available just in case. The $2k was always my limit though - any more per year and I considered the car not worth the cost of upkeep. I would still have my RX-7 today if a drunk had not crashed into it.
