Thinking of getting a Z4.
The S2000 is simple car, and that's what makes it so awesome.
I totally agree with this comment! And I think the Nissan is as well to some extend.
As I said over here we do not have any 350z yet but soon we start jetting Japan imports.
I saw them over on the continent and they sure look fine & mascullne. But have no idea if they drive as they look. The figures are there with 3.0lt V6 near 300bhp rear wheel drive!

I agree with everything you said, except for these two statements.
The S2k shifter is extremely smooth, almost to the point where I can't even feel that I put it in gear. The only time it feels "notchy" is when I'm way past needing to change the MTF and when the transmission is cold. I find it interesting that you are the first person that has ever written that a BMW's shifter is smoother than an S2k's...
The other thing is that you say the Z4 has MORE engineering. You simply don't know how many hours were spent trying to get either car to work as planned, but I'd bet 120hp/liter(yes, I brought it up!) from a reliable street car is no easy feat. Sure, the technology might be newer, but newer is not always equal to better.
"You get what you pay for" stands true in most cases, but I think you're selling the S2000 short.

Having driven quite some BM's, they have a good shifter, but nothing touches the MX5 and S2000 shifter IMHO. But that's only me... You just almost feel the gears connect and you know exactly where it is and what it is doing. Sometimes I think the slogan 'Driver's car' is at least as much on it's place on the S2000.
I agree that BM have very very good engines, but in the end, everybody can make great power and torque with large engines. We must give credit to Honda for making a reliable 120HP/L NA engine and a redline of 9K with normal service intervals, nobody else comes close
Like a lot of BM's and especially the M's
porschefan,
The Z4's styling is polarizing. Period. The cut-line scallops in fender and doors just don't work for me. The rear end of the car is too bunched up, as if it were hit from behind. The front view is OK. In any case, it's apparent to me that BMW wanted a "love it or hate it" design, so you shouldn't be surprised when people ding it for its looks. As I said earlier, I have not warmed up on this car in several years of repeated attempts to like it.
The S2000's design is more "classic," in some sense. I (personally) feel it's an elegant design (particularly the beautiful front fenders), but it's easy to be middle of the road about it. Honda got a few things wrong, but didn't stick it's neck in the chopping block.
All I can say is that we offer our opinions to you, so take that for what it's worth. If you like the Z4's looks, go for it. Just be sure you can live with yourself in the morning, rather than chew your arm off to escape.

...S2000! S2000! S2000! For the Win!
Hehe, I'm biased, but you knew that already eh Jes?
Isma, had you test driven the 2006/2007 S2000? Beginning February the new C-RV'll be here too...

As for the 350Z roadster, you should probably try test driving one and an s2000 fairly close together. The 350Z is several hundred pounds heavier, so you may feel like the S2000 drives better. I'm surprised you're only just now getting the 350z in Malta. You don't have many/any Japanese imports yet? If so, I suppose people could just buy in Italy and ferry it over.
^ Glad you liked it
Registration tax on cars is high in Malta. You could say that half the cars in Malta are Second-hand grey imports from Japan. The 350z would fall in the highest tax bracket, so it'd take a few years before they devalue enough in Japan to be sold in Malta.

I love the way the Z4 looks. There is nothing out there like it. You cannot confuse it for anything else. It is radical, distinct, and beautiful.
The S2000's looks are nice, but extremely boring. Nothing extreme about it.
As for the S2000's shifter being not that great, uh, whatever. It's probably the best shifter out there. I can't say because I haven't driven everything, but most who have say that the S2k tranny is not only up there, but at the top of there.

get a boxster because then you'll want that next
. after test driving a boxster, z4 and owning a s2k , the boxster is the best roadster. i did appreciate the value of the s2k afterwards though.
but ultimately your decision as ppl are stating.
