Average Speed Cameras?
Forgive me for pointing this out, but we have just had a change of government.
Allegedly the new government aims to pull back the Nanny State.
They have already commandeered speed camera £s.
Which will curtail the Local Authorities ...
The times they are a changing.

Does anyone know what distance these cameras work over, for instance is there is a 2 mile stretch of road works, do they work your average out for the 2 miles or is it split into sections (which then doesn't seem like an average)?

From memory, through roadworks they tend to be around 1m apart, although I could be wrong.
The cameras are paired, so they could measure your average over 200m or 2km, it depends how far apart the cameras are.
Two cameras cannot break your average down between them - so with two cameras 1km apart you could drive at 55mph for half the distance and 45 for the other half and still be ok if the speed limit is 50mph.
So if the cameras are 1m apart in a 5m stretch do they get your averages for the 5 sections and work out an average for the entire 5m stretch or is it simply just between the cameras?
It seems daft to me to have the cameras in pairs because if they are, between the first pair and the second pair there will be a 1m gap where you can go as fast as you want as i've never seen two cameras next to each other before?

I simply keep to the imposed speed limit. I can't say that by doing so my quality of life has been adversely affected.
UNLESS you are unnecessarily holding up people who don't wish to
driving three abreast at 49 mph is unnecessary
there is plenty of space for sheep in one or two lanes
Apparently the changing lanes principal exploits a European Law that doesn't allow camera use on both lanes.
I have however not tried this as to be honest they're normally only for a few miles - M1 nr Sheffield and A1M nr Knaresborough permitting!
