Average Speed Cameras?
that's probably a trait more likely to be associated with someone who likes holding people up
I can't really identify with it
obstructiveness is one of those things I simply cannot understand
what satisfaction do you derive from it and how can you possibly judge anything about the character, thinking or needs of people you are obstructing?
it just seems stupid to me - the only explanation I can think of
sooner or later someone will take it personally and then things end in tears
it's aggressive behaviour that will eventually produce an aggressive response

Average Speed Cameras are also a good way of finding out who knows what "average" means.
I tend to stick the cruise control on at about 53 (according to GPS) which is about 55 on the speedo.
It's amazing the number of people who shoot past then see a camera and brake. My understanding (and hope) is that it's too late for that!
There's also a large number of people who crawl overtake, pull in and slow down. WTF?

It's a good reason not to obstruct, you see some fascinating behaviour.
It's fun trying to guess what's going through people's minds when they come past at 70mph. Are they stupid? Have they stolen it? Is someone about to give birth?
Or maybe that's just me
Setting the cruise control in ASC controlled zones is the only rational thing to do.
And I'm completely comfortable overtaking slower traffic when there's additional lanes, albeit at the speed the cruise control is set at. I don't particularly care if that 'obstructs' those who wish to go faster for a period of time - but I may well protract the manoeuvre if they hang off the rear bumper...

as far as I am aware
no-one is talking about overtaking people at the speed limit
my interest is in why some people stay in lane (where there are no signs requiring you to do so)
thereby impeding the progress of people who do not wish to observe the limit

Perhaps they are being kindly to those who are challenged in terms of intelligence, saving them from points and a fine?
My local stretch of motorway (M25) has had average cameras on it for the last year or so and I remain amazed at the number of peole who zip along well in excess of the 50 limit and then slow down to the posted limit every time they see a SPECS camera - behaviour usually associated with GATSOs.
Add to that that all 3 lanes are usually being used up to the beginning of the average zone, everyone slows to 50mph, whilst maintaining the usual "slightly too close to the car in front" approach they use for the rest of the M25. There's really little opportunity to move over at all.
But then lane discipline is usually awful, ASC controlled zone or not.
Some facts:
If a 50mph zone lasts for 5 miles, driving at 70mph through it will save a whole minute and 43 seconds

or is willing to pay the fine because getting to their destination more quickly is much more important
either would suggest that it's the obstructive driver who is lacking in intelligence
As I implied in the rest of my post.
Any "obstruction" is rarely deliberate but is down to awful lane discipline or general traffic levels.
Seems we largely agree: https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showt...post&p=18755129

I think it's very commonplace, for example:
Make to overtake a line of traffic and see the gaps close
Indicate to change lane on d/c or motorway and ditto
The example given where people occupy three lanes abreast at 50mph, where they could easily move over
People 'pacing' the inside lane in the outside lane before lanes converge, to prevent merging in turn
