If it's really a beater, why buy a top spec/good example? Why not take a punt on a

The problem is that you're buying a car which would be ideal for a first car for some one and therefore you'll be paying a premium.

Would be worth looking at something either a bit bigger/older/higher mileage - ex rep car - or something with a high insurance group and then insure TPFT.

Your choice at the end of the day, but I've gone the big comfy barge option both times I've bought a 'beater' and definately far happier with them than I would have been with a little car. Just installed cruise control on the Saab for the princely sum of

I can see your point Rob but every 2-3 weeks I will be using it to go to London to watch footy and its 300 miles there and back so a small economical car would be better for me IMO.
