Not everybody has the time and space to own and maintain a whole fleet of cars so in that case a car like this makes a lot of sense. It does everything you need a car to do and is good at it too.
I love the fact that bar washing it I don't have to do anything to my M, I don't have the urge to modify it or mess around with it just drive it when I want to and it's a pleasure to do so. It's the most comfortable car I've ever owned and it's still fun when you want it to be.
There's not many cars where you can have a lot of fun on a trackday one day and do a comfortable 3000 mile Euro trip with the whole family and a boot full of crap the next, without worrying the thing is going to fall apart.

It might do everything you need a car to do but there is no car built that does everything I want to do. I of course accept that some make better compromises than others.
There was a long running thread on pissedupheads with some utter knob maintaining a 320D was all the car you needed.
Now though, the newer D3 offers a few upgrades, and they've toyed with the larger 3 litre derv. Bit of a one sided review, but impressive figures, all the same...

The ultimate motorway slag? Probably...
If I were to have 9 cars.... I'd conceed that some sort of "M" would be in there, one or two have been utterly brilliant that i've driven/passengered. Probably a Trevor, a prancing horse and a handful of Honda's to restore. I can only dream
I had three cars at one point, I'm down to two now. I have my daily beater (Focus) and my S2000. I do often think about selling them both and replacing them with a car that can cover both duties. Not sure I could manage running 9, it's bad enough with two trying to remember when they need servicing, MoT's, insuring etc etc.

No place for an M in my stable with the possible exception of an E46. E30 too expensive, E39 too many high mileage rusty knackered examples and been there, E36 not good enough and been there, M5 V10 not nice enough to drive, complex and more and more faults emerging, V8 M3 too complex so dealer dependency built in. Never owned an Alpina. Never really got the point of high power on motorways, especially nowadays. Comfort is everything. On most motorways an ancient barge will only be a couple of minutes, if that, behind a supercar, over a typical trip. Super powerful diesel - so what? Where exactly does anyone think it will get them beyond the back bumper of the next car and a load of stress.
for motorway journeys you should just max the balance between comfort and cost. i had a 75 mile each way commute a few years ago and a Vectra DTi was perfect. It was about 5 years old and maybe 7 when i flogged it. It was quiet, pretty frugal, pretty much bulletproof reliability, had a good enough stereo and it was comfortable.
it cost me very little to do mega miles in her and that car owed me nothing at the end. A more relaxing drive than it's Ford equiv of the time which had harder suspension, a more peaky engine and worse consumption
those journeys are hateful though..

Time is running out for me to get one of my dream cars, but who knows... One of these, a lovely British summer's day, wife and four friends on board; could life be any better!

Works better on the Linc, admittedly.
But your rear passengers would shiver to death in our modern summers, either way.
