Actually, BMW DID think to do just that.
Impressed by the possibility of the MG RV8 in the Rover days, they did look to do the same thing with their Heritage 02 shells and the then-current E36 running gear.
There was however some unforeseen certification issue (crash structure or pedestrian unfriendliness IIRC?) that made it unviable and the 1er got green-lighted off the back if it.

Yes.
We should celebrate these cars as petrolheads regardless of their cost
In my youth the supercars had 470bhp and hot hatches 120bhp
Ok the M2 is chunky like all modern cars but it would destroy a mk1 GTi for outright speed, its rwd and can probably do everything well while still being a hoot. Maybe not as much of a hoot as that mk1?
Anyway, i'm glad they make em

They were also way more elegant, had for less mass and bulk and had a certain difference about them. In my day they had even less. An A112 Abarth was about 75 and an A5 about 90 as I remember.
I think the fact that cars are largely designed and tested (including crashed) virtually these days results in a certain sameiness and makes them about as attractive and interesting as 1980s drum machine sound.
Though yes, we'll see the M2 better with a few years' hindsight. We're too close to it ATM.
