BMW M2
There is a point about fun with the old machines.
But the inevitable required overtakes are very difficult without the modern power delivery.
Every single car ever made is a compromise in some form or other. You just choose the compromise that best suits you.
I'm not a spanner monkey, I have no garage or room for one, and I do quite a few miles and dedicate a lot of my life to non-car things. So I need something that is reliable as well as suiting my own personal driving needs. When I'm older and have more free time I will go down the mulitple car route. The M2 I am pretty sure will be a very good car. And will suit some people fantastically.
And it will also suit some image obsessed wankers too. But that's life.

I can't help but feel in the not too far distant future we will wish cars like the M2 were still being produced.
i think we're all erring to some common ground
the most engaging, fun at any speed, car I have driven was a 140bhp Caterham. I didn't get out of 2nd gear and drove sideways around cones all day and when I got back into the M I was dumbfounded at how numb it felt
but could I live with a caterham? yes, I probably could.. and when the lad is old enough feck it
2 x 2 seaters.. my missus will love me. When I trade her Nissan for a GL maybe

Whilst I agree overtakes might be tricky (perhaps shouldn't even be considered) in a Morris Ital, most older cars manage the job perfectly well. Driving enthusiasts, if they have a penchant for the Ital and its ilk, will tow a (small) caravan or tootle to shows, but those more typified here might drive the aforementioned Mk1 GTi and its peers, all of which are perfectly capable of making progress in modern conditions. With the exception of my Vitesse tootler, my slowest car is a 1997 323i with 170bhp and that car is perfectly capable in traffic or anywhere else. A twelve year old Boxster S will destroy (coz people seem to like that word) a new 320D anywhere, as well as being infinitely more desirable, appreciating in value and only costing you £8K.

Nicely summarised, Chilled!
