ok
that would be (broadly) like fear of public speaking then

more about perception
although obviously you would have to pick a very dodgy audience, or a very dodgy spider, to face the same potential consequences of mounting a bike........

It's learned as an infant (before the reasoning mind has developed) usually from hysterical maternal behaviour.
A fear of public speaking is similarly acquired due to the general inferiority complex that the educational system is so effective at instilling.
I think the bike thing is more empirical;
Personally, I discovered that if you put a lunatic on a bike, he will ride it at 10/10 and it allows very little margin for error/unforeseenness, compared to a car. I also discovered that Kicking Bedford KMs out of the way is not a feasible option and that M20 wheelnuts f uck with your feet a bit.
I've ridden since, but every time I get serious about it, some other poor schmuck gets seriously injured/slightly killed. It's not inasmuch that 'someone's trying to tell yer something' (they tried to indoctrinate me with that shit, as an infant; I discovered statistics n' stuff) more it merely (sadly) widens my sample space.
Apart from the totally forgiving handling, Honda's CBR2000 also offers many sartorial and ergonomic advantages over its smaller, two-wheeled brethren.
Nice one Mark, you know it makes sense
Regarding bikes, I wouldn't go near one on a road. Having seen two bike accidents close up and spent much of my youth falling off relatively low-powered motorcrossers, I know that I would die on one. It's not about having balls, more about having brains, and wanting them to stay inside my head.
Plus, the helmet messes my hair up.

but biking is quite dangerous and I dont know many sports that are significantly more so - maybe going for the world water speed record or cave diving?
3 close shaves on my bike which have nothing to do with other road users:
1. covey of partridge getting up around me when i was doing 80 on a straight B. one of them hits you on the head easy enough for you to come off
2. going round a sharp corner and missing a huge pot hole by about 3 inches. narrow road and on coming cars meaning i had to stay very tight to the edge which meant had very little prior warning
3. making good progress down the m3 at night and coming accross several full black bin bags in the road. didnt see them until i was on top of them - lucky i passed 2 ft to the left.
