Dilemma....
Good points all of you!
Ive got a couple of months to think about it
I know if I keep the S its going to cost me a fair bit of money as there's a lot I feel needs doing to it mods wise. Trouble is that ive come from an extemely powerful car and I want more! The EVO in question is very low miles and not even a scratch on it. Also has all the right bits out the box and I know I wouldnt be wanting to mod it to the extremes of the S.
Point taken on the handling too. The S is ok in this department, but the EVO is miles ahead!
I can live witht he image too, much beter than a scoob alas....

As an owner of an FQ300 for a couple of years prior to the S Id be happy to give an honest view on the ownership and tracking experiences. I used mine as a daily driver
AB: I lost 10K on the car in 2 years it comes with the territory I'm afraid

Evo has a lot more grip, but as for handling, they are both very different prospects, it's not really a good comparison to make as they both have the inherent characteristics of their drivetrain layout to cope with.
True Mark, but in terms of pace round twisty stuff, the S is very good but anyone who has driven one of these things will probably agree its a hell of a lot more competent. Grip and handling are better.
Im in no way having a pop at the S, I love it just it does have its limits.
LM, be interested in your views. I do about 12-14k miles per year. Prob will be going abroad in early 2007 so I could live with the costs til then

True Marc but the top down thing has never really been my main reason for the car (which sounds odd!) I do like it down on occasion, but im not a die hard by any means! Think you should buy a 32 GTR as a toy

I wasn't defending the S Mark, I don't have one anymore anyway....
I have driven an Evo 5 on the road, and it is very, very good at covering ground, much more accessible than the S, and with the torque and the AWD it allows even moderate drivers to get from A to B indecently quickly.
But I found it a one-trick pony. It's a good ground coverer (is that a word?) but I kind of felt that it was only at 5/10ths and to drive the car to it's limits would be suicidal on the road.
Then, on track I had a go in an Evo 6, again, great traction and grip, but on a dry. smooth track, the S was easier (for me) to drive, in fact I went past the Evo several times (this was at Llandow, a short circuit), the driver just couldn't get the car balanced properly, neither could I, it felt like it wanted to understeer all the time.
Now, I'll happily admit I an not an expert when it comes to AWD cars, but my Integrale was a whole heap more fun and had a lot more driver feedback - the Evo felt like it was simply point and bury the throttle.
I think you'll be bored after the novelty of being able to go everywhere at breakneck speed wears off.....

I've just had and got rid of an JDM Evo 9 GSR which I bought in December. Some people may remeber I was looking to get rid of the S a few months back. An Evo wasn't really one of the cars I was considering and but this came along at such a good price I couldn't pass it up (plus I've always liked Evos so I thought I give it a shot). Basically I kept the Evo for a few months and put the S up for sale. However, every time I drove the S I felt I couldn't get rid of it so I decided to sell the Evo and keep the S. Here's the pros and cons as I saw them:
- Speed: the Evo is A LOT faster than the S. The Evo is a complete hooligan. It accelerates so fast you can barely hang on.
- Handling: The gizmos make it feel like it's on rails. The first day I had it I went round a smallish roundabout in the pouring rain and the grip was unreal.
- Running Costs: Ridiculous! It destroys petrol. I tried one week to see how much milage I could get out of a tank by driving as efficiently as possible. I went through the whole tank in a week. Compare this to a tank lasting 2 weeks of 'normal' driving in the S. If I drove the Evo like the S it would go through a tank in about 4 days.
- Overall: The Evo is a great car. Mine was an 05 with 8000kms. It felt a quality car and was an amazing piece of driving technology. However, if you're not thrashing it it's the most boring car in the world to drive. Driving round in traffic and round town it's horrible. When driving slowly it seems like you have almost no power. It's kind of all-or-nothing. Given that I used it as a daily drive (which meant half my time in traffic) plus the horrendous fuel bill meant it just couldn't compete with the S. The S is just much more fun drive all the time. Plus it feels like you're driving it rather than the computers. You don't really get much feel in the Evo; it's rather like driving a mondeo that turns into a cruise missile when you floor it.
