But they are certainly looking at contrivances to make the cars more noisy during the tests.

The rest of us who watch it for the technical and talent showcase rather than just who can combust hydrocarbons the loudest can get on with watching it.
It's definitely lost some charm in the sound, but it's not volume in my opinion that's lacking, the engines sound lazy like they aren't being strained. And making that sound louder won't make it better. In fact hearing the other noises now adds interest to it I wouldn't want them drowning out with a loud but dull engine sound.
Okay, exaggeration for effect, but they have drafted in a team of noise experts for the testing, when they could be spending time on tyre compounds or aero for instance.
