Future classics
I think, unless the ship has sailed that ye old VW beetle is one.
Moreover, some Citroen Pallas or whatever will increase in value.
We used to own 2 Fiat500 Classics '58 and '65. Unfortunately we sold them. My quest to find a good one to restore will leave me 10K short after.
Those cars were so so cheap yet now are so desireable.

I'd say one to look out for is the RX-8; soon to depreciate away to nothing, it has huge upside potential over the next decade!
they make good beaters now if your mileage is low

Most of the cars listed have already been called. Quattros and most Borgwards have appreciated considerably in valuse over the last decade.
But I'm not sure if they've peaked
An example would be a Ford Sierra RS Cosworth (3 door)
They were 6-7k a couple of years ago
Expect to pay at least 10k for a good one now and much, much more for a proper one (18k plus)
A low mileage, undamaged and original RS500 is upwards of £30k

Defining what makes a car collectable is a difficult one, as it's a concept, usually bourn out of the desire the car held for the potential collector in the first place (Alegro Owners Club et al). The other paramaters I considered were genuinely desirable, moved the game on to a new level or were clever, but not appreciated when new (a bit like the XJS, not that it was particularly clever, but it is better recieved now than when new).
So my list so far is:
BMW 635 CSi
Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo
Ford Puma
Audi A2
SAAB 900 Turbo (pre GM)
Volvo 850 Estate T5/T5 R
Toyota MR2 Mk 1

Missed the boat there - they've been fetching daft money for ages.

1992 isn't an original Mini - a man of your years should be keenly aware of that. The only reason any of them have front subframes is due to the amount of oil that leaked onto them from every seal on the engine.
The problem with collecting stuff is that you end up with too much to use and as far as cars are concerned, that's a total waste.

You can then spend your free time crushing what you do not want whilst getting parts basically for free for what you want to maintain.
Some people would argue a Marina is a classic, for me it's somewhere you keep poncy boats.
Peugeot 405 Mi16
Peugeot 205 1.9 Gti
Peugeot 309 Gti
Peugeot 306 Gti6
I've seen good 309s starting to change hands for silly money of late, also Passats etc as they get cheap enough for the 'scene' to want to carve them up, the original really clean ones start to pick up in price.
If you really want to make some money, start buying up Mk1 Golf Caddy pickups or anything else from the 70s and 80s VW stable.

BMW E30 325is?
Porsche 944?
VW Golf GTi Mk 2?
I can see people turning to older cars for fun as new cars have to be greener and increasingly dull in order to be runnable without breaking the bank.

and I'd also add original sciroccoA friend of a friend started doing this as a hobbie. He's had 3 Aston Martins DBS's and is now now looking to move on to a DB6 or an E-type Jag. He's apparently banked a tidy profit
