Personality plays a huge part. I get bored with cars. Also it doesn't matter if the fixes are free if it needs them constantly. Not that I think the GT86 will, but you get the point.

If you like cars, you'll want to change (Nick, you're a freak)
If you believe your own press, you'll want to change
If you have the attention span of a housefly (most of the UK these days) you'll want to change

Company car schemes used to be a big offender, but now they're extending durations. Even private leases are extending.

We're slowly learning. And things like toyotas longer warranties are definitely helping.

Those stripes really don't do the car any favours.

Looking forward to seeing a fast version of this and the Subaru offering.

This one wouldn't pull you out of bed.

I like the look of these but my S2000 dropped one like it was a fiesta or something off a roundabout on the a50 (up to 70 of course). Really disappointed with the pace, I can't believe anyone would be happy to pay the new price to get that from a "sports" coupe.

Probably still obeying the 4,000 running in limit! In which case, be very scared.

But as I stated previously, it's no S2000 replacement; but for a cheaper, C-derived coupe (like the one in your avatar!) it's very promising for that.

Let the tuning and the S2000-eating commence! Give it a few years and it will surely happen on a roundabout near you.

I agree, i'd wager it compares well vs a scirrocco, an Alfa or that astra gtc thing for the same money
The S used to be the step up when hot hatches had sub 200bhp, now many are 250+ with similar price tags. The astra has 280ps I think, that and fwd in our climate sounds twatty. I assume its fwd, the horrid fokus is

I know - if I had a barn & more time I'd have shed loads of ancient shi'...

The implication I was really making was that if you want to change cars more frequently and are afraid of depreciation, it'd be far better to go from 2-4 years or 3-6 or whatever, rather than buying new. The five bag I gave for the 'Lude was a bloody steal.

I'm unsure how that would work in the future - fine for Toyotas & Hyundais (!) but I think companies like Warranty Direct will become significant.

Don't forget the CR-Z too!

Anything FWD CUV-hatch-plank derived is a compromised POS to drive. Thus the 86 pisses on them all from a great height, even if it's slightly slower to the ton.

Having said that, the PTW is about the same as the 'Lude, which is the fastest distance car I've ever driven. That cheats rather a lot, though and the Toyota cannot!

For any given power below about 300bhp, identical weight & power FWD vs RWD, the FWD will be quicker everywhere other than off the line. And that power level is increasing over time as they're producing better and better suspension/diff combos.

And fun is comparative too. The Megane R26.R is phenomenal fun around on the limit as you can lob it around with impugnity and not worry about spaffing it into a barrier unless you're a complete tool (which 99% of the population unfortunately are).

But as you can't get anywhere near the limit in anything at least half fast these days, the GT86 makes for a great proposition. Unfortunately not for me because I've been spoilt with large amounts of power.

However, I'm going to find a GT86 forum, register, wait until winter and enjoy all the "I crashed it in .01mm of snow" threads. Although the skinny tyres should make it less prone than an S2000 on that front.

Its interesting, we all have a base reaction to stats, I certainly do anyway. 200bhp feels lacking. Its daft I suppose and Nick is right, we should try the car.

The S is my winter car now with winter tyres, in that setup its more capable than most.

That is all so very true!

However, I'll think you'll find that the leading-edge forum members are already talking about winter tyres. Wait until it's a bit more commonplace. by the time the trailing-edge members join, of course there'll be few good ones left.

PS - Notts; the presence of an NSX in the garage allows me to be totally hypocritical about the irrelevence of high(-ish) powered cars today, for todays when the 'Lude seems a bit lacking.
