I realised how useful my Omega estate was just after I sold it

I then had some stupid ideas involving towbars and M5s that are best not discussed

So after this thread, I bought another big estate for tip trips etc

I plan to insure it on only the days I need it - as an additional vehicle, for about a fiver a day

Which when you look at how much time you actually spend in a car, is a very cheap way to insure it

As long as you don't have any concerns about it being nicked, which I don't

didn't realise you could do that. thought the car needed to be insured by someone in order to add it to your own policy for a day.

they've never asked before

not sure why that we would be the case either

although I have had trouble adding a car to my policy that is already insured

they claimed the owner had to add me

something about not being possible to double insure one car

Yes, that's correct. As it's not your car, you don't have an insurable interest in it. Your insurer can give you 3rd party liability cover (and most do) as there is an insurable interest in that they cover claims for damage caused by you.

A parallel would be me trying to cover your house on my house insurance. I'd be trying to insure myself against the loss/damage of something I don't actually own. If they did offer that cover, I'd be straight round to burn your house to the ground and claim the insurance money, you could claim the money off your insurers, and we'd all be better off, doubling our money, so to speak.

I have a feeling I know what this is, Gad. We had a few punters ring up about it (and on the E46 M3 as well)... just not possible! So you're not alone...

Really? What year M5 was it, Crispy? Because any M Power BMW with the quad exhausts can't have a towbar because the back box gets in the way of the mounting points.

If it was a later M car, I bet the bloke had done a right lash-up job to get it fitted! You're right to be a bit nervy around someone like that, I wouldn't think the trailer would stay attached for long!
