Default Origin B2 - couple of questions

Apologies if this seems like an obvious question, but I have searched the forum and on the web for a quick explanation but have failed.

The Origin B2, am I correct in thinking it comes with a laser detector as standard, but the radar detector retails at an additional

I sold my B2 solo to P1 on here, but if IIRC, the unit does indeed come with a laser detector and can be fitted with an optional (and almost certainly illegal) laser diffuser. I'm not sure about the radar detector.

The laser detector simply detects laser light directed at it and alerts the driver. Mine never once went off, even when I flashed my little laser keyring directly at it. I'm told they're a waste of time anyway as you only have seconds to react to the alarm. Probably fair to say that by the time the unit alerts you, you've already been done.

The laser diffuser, on the other hand, reacts to incoming laser light by directing a diffuse beam back towards the original signal. It is said this will confuse the speed gun preventing it from giving Plod a reading. Not sure if these work but if the Police ever found out you had one, I think they'd want to have a word ...

There may be an option to fit a radar detector to the Origin, but I'm not sure which speed cameras use radar these days ...

Thanks Shiskine, I wasn't planning on a laser diffuser as I want to stay on the right side or on the line of the law. Just curious what this 'extra' radar detector is and which devices it detects.

GATSO uses radar still, but should be in the B2 database

Mobile units tend to use laser, radar is a bit out-dated for the mobile cash machines IIRC.

Would not worry with the radar part - unlikely to be useful.

TBH, if you get clocked on a laser one, you only have a split second to brake HARD as they tend to take multiple readings.

Very happy with my B", only had it a couple of months, not as flash as some of the newer ones (GPS speed takes slightly longer to change vs the Road Angel), but always been reliable and worth the investment

Hope it helps!

with MJ2k

Have had mine for a couple of years. The laser detector has never gone off until I am right underneath mobile units so had I been speeding at the time, it would have been too late.

The GPS database is very comprehensive and even contains the possible DS2 locations so I have never felt the need to get the radar detector bit.
