WHoa calm it tiger

I don't have any problems in heels either !

Whats wrong with a Jazz??

All I was suggesting is that you may find yourself a bit bored in a FWD/4WD heavy 4 door saloon............... coming from the S thats all.

The ATR is pretty quick but doesn't really provide ME with the fun that the S does!

On the other hand as you so eloquently put you buy a car for what you need it for i.e. if you want to go off road you buy a Landrover and if you have 14 Cats 6 kids, 3 dogs and 2 bikes then you buy a people carrier.

Already discounted that - didn't like the previous CTR and would prefer a beefier engine, rather than high revving vtec - always thought it sounded like a hairdryer (and no I don't want to start putting after market exhausts on)

What I'd like is a car that:
* Has cup holders (sorry!)
* I can swap my shoes before customer meetings without hoppng around in the carpark
* Isn't small and insignificant in the dark on a rainy day on the motorway
* I don't constantly have to worry about it - I can just drive it without having to think all the time about slippy slidey action on corners (although obviously thats always on your mind whatever you drive)
* Can easily fit week/weekends gear in it without squashing it in and having to pack light
* Can fit a towbar for a bike rack and/or Caterham towing
* Is comfortable
* Makes me grin
* Is a bit different
Why not just get a 2.0 Tdi estate and leave the traction control/ handling systems switched on and put a comedy show in the player?

That hits most of your stated targets

You sound like what you desperately want is something completely standard - not a performance car at all. Seems like a waste of money for the additional 'go and show'.

Or if you are really that worried about being 'small and insignificant in the dark on a rainy day on the motorway', how about a Transit...

Or one of those Mitsubishi pick up things...

What about the out-going RS4. Admittedly at the top end of your budget for a slightly older one but they are rare, comfortable, monster quick, fairly reliable, etc, etc. It's the sort of daily sports car that really compliments a caterham for those more mad drives.

Outgoing RS4 is nice, but would be completely out of warranty...

Rob - I don't want to drive a blob. I'd hate it. The car has to fulfil the grin factor and specialness; I don't know any TDi's that do that.

What I want is a car that combines the practicality I need with the fun nature that I want. It's not an easy search admittedly. The Caterham is great, but lets face it - I spend a lot more time in my daily driver than I do in the 7 - no point being ambivilent, or worse hating, the car you spend hours a week in. Spending 3k on a car - fair enough - but spending 18-25k on a car? Why buy a blob?
