I won't force my way in as I understand how merging should work, and you need to always be careful when going past a queue of stationary or slow moving vehicles. At the end of the day we all want to get where we are going, and I don't see myself anymore important than anyone else, but I don't see the point of sitting in a queue when there is a perfectly decent bit of empty road next to it.
The highway code has, I believe, changed in recent years. Where two lanes merge to form one (ie one lane ceases, and one carries on) it used to recommend getting into the lane that carries one as early as possible. I believe it has recently been changed to use both lanes as long as possible, thus shortening the queue and knock-on to junctions further back down the road. Clearly this doesn't take account of the numpties who charge down the outside at a huge speed differential (although in theory, the space shouldn't exist under the new recommendations), or the numpties who consider slow use of the second lane as 'pushing in'. Waiting till the last minute is clearly daft too, as you really want to match the speed of the continuing lane, indicate in plenty of time and pull into the space, which of course the driver in the other lane is leaving in case the the car in front of him/her stops suddenly....

Do most drivers know this, or even drive to these 'rules'? Sadly not.

If everyone did it then the left lane would be empty!!
And there'd be a massive queue in the right hand lane...

It's not gang warfare. Currently you're trying to justify behaviour that many on here think is inconsiderate and selfish. They (and I) are trying to point this out to you.

You are more than welcome to ignore us and carry on, but if you do want to justify it, then please expect a robust argument.

If you go onto the Brake! website and try to justify exceeding the speed limit ever, you'd then discover what a real flaming was, "you murderer"

But that's my point. I don't expect everyone to agree with me but the extent of some peoples responses are excessive considering its not illegal but maybe just an inconvenience to others. I just think the responses were over the top considering.

I learnt my lesson on here about a year ago. I started a thread and mentioned about some bad driving I witnessed from a biker and I got slated for being a bad driver myself. Since then I haven't mentioned anything like this in any thread and probably never will.

Hope this helps.

Minvo.

PS: It's still a great place for a chat and to get good advice on your car though. Cheers everyone!

I had a truck driver act as policeman by swerving in front of my car as I drove down lane 2 while he and others queued in the inside lane 800 yards before a merge on the A66 last week. Not only was he wrong, and my use of lane 2 (at a sedate speed) was within the guidelines of the highway code, but his swerve caused me to have to stand on the brakes to avoid running into the back of him - as I told the woman on the end of the 'Hows my driving' 0800 line when I reported him.

Hope he at least got a bollocking, if only for the single finger salute he gave me as he pulled out.

Yep, agreed. I will definitely will watch what I say on here now which is a shame as its quite good for a bit of banter and conversation but when people start getting personal its unacceptable.

Put simply, it's selfish and inconsiderate of others.
With all due respect LG, so is speeding but I guarantee we all do it.

That's a very strange argument.

I see you've avoided the point about what would happen if everyone did it.

The left hand lane would be empty, and people like me would use it
