unkiet, i actually have a real question on behalf of one of my dumber friends. He has a squire strat which he hasn't touched in ages ... the strings are seriously looking rusty, it is that bad. there is also something wrong with the output ... if you jiggle the connection a bunch you can sometimes get volume but mostly nothing is coming through to the amp. given how cheap these stupid things are, should he just dump it and get a new one... or try to get it repaired someplace... or try to repair it himself?

That's why I used the quotes. Rocking out means something to a whole bunch of different folks.

Some folks find the mellow strummings of those pantywaists more than enough rocakge for a day.

Either way, it doesn't change my opinion that it's mostly pablum. . . John Mayer and Michael Franti touring together next year could be just plain awful: either Franti is going to get mellowed out (doubtful) or Mayer will throw a hissy fit as he gets blown out of the water.

Tangentially related: over the last year, I've seen Michael Franti three times. . . and as his popularity has been increasing, the energy in the audience has been going down. Shirts have been cleaner, and I don't seem like the oddball anymore.
Good point.

I do admit to liking Dave Matthews but was summarily unimpressed seeing him live. I liked that he had a rep for switching up lyrics, but the whole thing just seemed...messy? Like he didn't care? I'll stick with the studio stuff and the live album he did with Tim Reynolds and leave it at that.

Oh and, um - delightful and lovely? Flattery will get you everywhere.

Yes, but only for the length of this page.

The fundamental answer is, "Play on the nicest instrument you (he) can afford." If he can drop $400-$700, then he can get something other than a Squier. 'nuff said.

I still haven't quite figured out how this style became a whole sub-genre. I mean, I'm all for sonic brutality. . . but the more discerning musician understands that you do that by establishing a baseline, and then suckerpunching (whether via timbre, dynamics, rhythm. . . whatever).

Just as anything gets established, they go off and do something else. . . and not always well (there's notable discrepancies in what should have been clearly 2 against 3 and some of the hemiola figures).

That said, if you enjoy this, free jazz might be pleasant contrast.

You know, aside from my brother, a few friends, and I, everyone that listens to this band says the same thing you just said. My one friend is a metalhead, but if I turn on BTBAM, his only reaction is, "It sounds like there are dozens of songs going on at once"... but I love it! Maybe following the lyrics helps?
