I was in 3rd year of my undergrad and it was my first day of placement at a downtown Toronto hospital. One of the social workers came and said she was supposed to go to a conference in NYC later that week but that she didn't think that was going to happen. We went to the tv just in time to see the second plane hit live. I wish more than anything I hadn't seen that. 
The hospital was on an external disaster alert, so we just sorta sat around for the rest of the day stunned. It was extremely bizarre to leave downtown at 4:30 because the streets were virtually empty.
