Alien Vs. Predator
I know all about them. "Aliens Vs. Predator" started as a comic book series published by Dark Horse some years ago. That came first. If the links you posted are to some novelization of the comic series, and perhaps an extension of that storyline, then it's even further removed from the source material.
Still exploitative. Just because someone publishes a novel using characters from some earlier work doesn't automatically make it good. Novels can be trash too. (I'm not saying these are; I haven't read them, but they are pretty far removed from the source.)
The sources for "Aliens vs. Predator" are the Alien movies and the Predator Movies. The Alien movies were arguably somewhere between good entertainment and genuine cinematic art. The Predator movies were... well, dumb brainless action films. I don't think anyone can disagree with that.
The core of my argument is that this AVP movie has a high probabililty of being like the Predator movies; just brainless action. Probably not coming anywhere close to art. That endangers the future prospects for a high quality, artful Alien production in the future. I honestly don't know why Fox agreed to diminish their Alien franchise like this.

I completely agree with you, I was just trying to say that they aren't necessarily pulled straight from the movies.
Since you obviously know more about the series than most people, I suggest you read the books. I'm sure you'd like 'em.
As for the movie, we both know its going to be commercialized crap, but what can we do?

The idea of an Aliens vs. Predator movie fills me with disgust. It's ok as a comic book, but to actually make a movie out of it seems like a serious mistake.
The Alien movies as a series have mostly been examples of serious cinema. Each one directed by a different cutting-edge director. Each one a different kind of story, with a different feel and theme. They have never been "just about the monster." They were about humanity's endless capacity for greed. Humanity's meddling in creation, both with robotics and genetic manipulation. Humanity's reaction to a natural force greater than it's own self-centered schemes.
Now we get an exploitation film that is nothing better than those idiotic Universal monster movies from the 40s. "Frankenstein vs. the Wolfman" or whatever. It's really frustrating to seem them pluck out the monster from the story, and thrust it into an empty shell just to hear the cash register ring.
I'm really afraid the Aliens series cannot recover from this. I WAS hoping that we would eventually see another serious Alien movie, maybe even directed by Ridley Scott himself, but now I fear it will never happen. This AVP movie will flop, and then 20th Century Fox will never OK another REAL Alien movie again.

Unfortunately, this movie will probably do fairly well... everyone likes a good monster flick and this one will be really styly! But for the art house critic who embraces the orginal Alien trilogy's symbolism this movie will be a cheese grater on their nerves.
It's getting pretty rare to watch a good meaty sci fi movie. One that satisfies the mind and senses.

Anyone see the trailer for AVP?
These 2 creatures are some of the all time best and they have been improved for this movie
Comes out 8/13
If you like monster movies like me, I can't wait
It will be intense!
BTW, anybody see Dawn of the Dead- remake- this was another intense classic!

The predator was even worse...the reason the predator looked more belieavable in the first two movies is this: The armor was sculpted on top of the flesh...In the new one, the company made the mistake of sculpting flesh, sculpting weapons and armor, and then mounting those on top of the sculpted flesh. What you end up with are ridiculously large predators...luckily they were able to CG alot of the proportional mistakes...Its funny to hear all the other "behind the scenes" stories from these guys.
I thought Freddy vs Jason was pretty funny. The Alien series lost all cinematic value with the last one, it was poo
Not every film can be oscar worthy. Both of the computer games were really good. And who knows...maybe it will have a decent plot
