The Tail of the Dragon is first on the record in reporting that most of the privately owned land bordering the Dragon will soon be sold and transferred into Federal ownership. The Tennessee Nature Conservancy is purchasing much of this Alcoa property and will immediately turn it over to the Federal Government. Some 600-700 acres located on the east side of US 129 from the Calderwood Overlook to Tabcat Bridge will be going to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Some 5000 acres on the west side of US 129 will be going to the United States Forest Service and will become part of the Cherokee National Forest. Alcoa will retain ownership of the old Calderwood town property, dam, and Little Tennessee River. We think this is good news and will help fend off any attempt to alter the roadway. There are also a number of endangered species in the area that will help to stop I-3 and any other major road improvements.
Does anyone know if this will change who will patrol 129?
Will it remain unchanged or will it be some branch of the National Forest/Park Service?

I hope this doesn't mean what I think it does . . . . .
Speeding fines may be increasing dramatically.

Mabey the RCMP.

I can outrun a horse. It only has like 1HP (depending on elevation and dyno correction factors.)

It should still be a US highway, patrolled by the THP and NCSP.

national parks are typically patrolled by rangers, with steeper fines. blue ridge parkway is a flat $500 fee now!

This is a good thing - it makes it less likely for the interstate plan to succeed
