Have you guys played Hardcore Team Deathmatch? I played it last night for the first time and I thought it was literally 'hardcore' and way too hard. It seems thats where all the really, really good players hang out.

Yep. there are some really good teams there, they actually use tatics and communicate with each other. I just run around with no tatics and get killed like the rest of my team.

yeah, probably not a big difference in the vector when they're as complex as they are. if anything, the vectors are probably more complex and larger in size.

Come to think of it, the final images as they appear on the cars in the game are more than likely flattened bitmap images created from the vectors, anyway. They're just throwing a huge extra step in getting to that bitmap.

Texture mapping is how they make 3d in games look more 3d than it actually is. That's all you're looking at here. If they define the file size limitation it's no worse than any other texture-mapped item in the game.

The Flash vs. Video comparison doesn't hold here. Flash is object-based and you're animating objects that only need to be instantiated once, whereas video is frame-based and requires an entirely new frame for each 1/30 second. Quite different than a complex vector vs. bitmap argument.

And they've never said file size was a problem.
What I was thinking was that they probably have an array of pre-defined images that is on every disc. That way all they need is a pointer to which image it is, and then define the offset of where it is. So the data that needs to be transmitted over the network is minimized. It should only be a few bytes:

image.number=520
location=REAR.TRUNK
offset.X=-200
offset.Y=125
size=200 (200 pct bigger)

That's like 20 bytes of data, compared to a tiny image that can be 5000 times that.

It's not that they can't render the small image, it's referencing the image over the network that's the problem. You would have to upload that image over your connection for every single race, whereas the custom vehicle's data is miniscule relative to the image data.

^

That's how all the MMORPGs do it, preloaded maps and graphics and npcs and then just have pointers

I feel like such a CoD newb.

I was playing Merc Team Deathmatch on Monday. I was just a lamb to the slaughter. I did go up from rank 1 to rank 5 in one day, but I REALLY need to rank up if I am ever going to hope to last more than 10 secs in a game.

Going from 1 to 20 is the easiest. After that, it can be frustrating. Especially doing it on the second time around(Prestige).
