Looks like an end *might* be in sight in the "format war".

Since Warner Bros. and New Line have gone BluRay exclusive and immediately after the announcement, the HD-DVD folks cancelled their CES presentation.

With Warner going BR-only, The Financial Times is reporting the Paramount is poised to switch to Blu-Ray (http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/dc409afa-b...nclick_check=1).

According to FT, there is some sort of clause in the contract with the HD-DVD camp that would allow Paramount to back out of the agreement in the event of a switch by WB. Who knows how much of that is truth, but its an interesting turn of events. They also note that while Paramount may have that clause, its possible that Dreamworks may not.

Interesting.

:sigh: I sure did. Although I saw it after I posted my link.

I suppose I shouldre-phrase my wording to represent the fact that the announcement was made last week just before CES (I thought that the announcement last week was unofficial), but seeing as how the link I posted was published today, I think it is still valid and the news about Paramount is new.

If *you* read the article you posted, it quoted a spokeswoman from Paramount as having said that they planned to continue support of HD-DVD as of the 6th, the FT article claims otherwise which I thought was interesting enough to share.

Why do I feel like that guy who purchased a Betamax player in 1986?

I was about "this" close to picking up the xbox HD-DVD add-on. Now I am wondering if that is such a good idea. It could end up pretty much just being a paperweight.

Anyone else notice that the DVD rental places tend not to carry HD or BluRay discs? At least the two in my area don't.

You still use video rental places?

Netflix carries both HD and BR. They let you select what your preference is and if the disc is available in that format when it comes up in your queue they'll ship it to you automatically.

As far as having bought a BetaMax player, I know what you mean. I'm holding off on purchasing any kind of stand alone hardware until there is a decisive victory from one side or the other. I've always felt (as Skip rightfully pointed out earlier) the players that are used in video game are pretty sub-standard anyway. Having a PS3 and being able to play and get BR discs has been an "added bonus" but I won't really be adopting any format heavily until I get a standa-alone player. I too don't want to make a heavy investment and end up with a beta player

FWIW, a lot of people think that the next-gen disc format is only temporary anyway as high def downloadable content will eventually be king. so

Meh... We don't watch enough movies to justify a Netfix membership. We actually almost always Pay-Per-View our movies. Even cheaper.

That being said, I do still want a stand alone unit. I was drawn to the XBOX player because it is cheaper than a stand alone but, because it is an accessory, is a stand alone unit. If that makes any sense...

After tomorrow (when we get our new dish and upgraded service), I'll be able to down load all of the HD PPV's so this whole discussion, as you point out, will probably become moot.
