Wasn't the Coast Guard supposed to enforce a 100 yard radius around the Superferry? From the videos I've seen they appear to have failed miserably at that on Kauai.
I think it is funny, there is always some one looking to get their rocks off on starting some commotion over something they will have little or no control over. What about container ships, tugs in tow and cruz ships. Why don't they fight them and protest their rightd to enter port. I wonder how many of these people have meth labs in their house.
I am happy I am not back in Kauai because I guaranty I would have been there in the middle of it. There are the people that fight growth and there are the people that accept it. It is like those damn abortion activast, kill the doctor for killing a un-born child, makes perfect since????

The Coast Guard successfully carried out the mission we were asked to, and will continue to do so until the situation is resolved.
That f*ing blows. I thought Hawaii's people were peace keepers??? Understandably, they don't speak for the rest of Hawaii... like anywhere else you'll have these kind of scenarios. This whole thing has me really dissappointed
. Members on base are being told they may not be able to make their trip this coming week. What a shame.

I think the whole situation at Nawiliwili was a failure on several fronts as all parties involved did a poor job of assessing the situation and planning accordingly. The Coast Guard is there of course to protect the public and not cause undue harm to anyone, including protesters, that I can understand but I think it's fair to say they had a difficult time enforcing the 100 yard radius that they had agreed upon with State and Superferry officials. Whether they had the correct equipment and personnel to do this or whether it is even realistic to enforce this protective zone I don't know. As far as harbor security on land is concerned, the DOT or DLNR (not sure who has jurisdiction here as both agencies manage local ports) did not provide adequate personnel or establish policy guidelines to aid the Kauai Police department which appeared overwhelmed by the turnout.
Regardless, I'm hopeful that the situation is able to resolve itself in a peaceful manner as I personally feel this venture is a beneficial one having used the ferry system in Seattle.
P.S. If I do travel to Kauai I promise not to pick any opihi.

As far as the local PD and DLNR, they have vary little jurisdiction in federal waters. In situations like this they will fall under the control of the Coast Guard due to the large jurisdictional power they are given. In most situations once on land the Jurisdiction turns over to state. The CG has over the past few years been able to gain some right on land with federal laws, but it mostly pretains to offenses that occure in the water before moving to land.
