Default Porting the rear tray

Hi all!

I'm after some advice on porting the rear tray to allow more bass to flow from the trunk where my sub is.

I've heard removing the smaller piece of the tray improves bass a bit and that removing the whole tray completely improves a lot. I do not want to remove it completely so wondered what results people have had by drilling holes in it? What size holes, where, how many, etc, etc? Some pics would be great too

I've also heard that by removing/porting not only are you letting more bass in, but also letting in more road noise as well, so I'd be interested to hear people's opinions/experiences on this too?

Many thanks!

I don't have any pics, but I cut a rectangular piece out of it and glued a fine mesh fabric to the hole for appearance... the hole is about 8" x 16". I also cut a smaller piece out of the trunk liner in the cavity on the back wall next to the sub. I did notice some slight increase in road noise, but the decrease in rattle and sound (while not huge, but noticeable) was worth it.

Why don't you turn up the bass?

Yes, making openings to the trunk will let more bass in, as well as road noise and make your higher frequency sound worse. It's a trade-off. I wouldn't do it.

You can also consider removing the plastic trim behind the seat with the airvent.

Because not all of the cars around you want to hear your bass...

Possibly he has some respect for the ears of those around him.

I've got the hole in my rear tray. With the top up, massive improvements, top down better but not perfect.

It's worth it IMHO.

BTW: it's a convertible, road noise comes with the unlimited headroom.

I'm thinking lots of 1/2 inch (ish) holes rather than one or two big pieces cut out - would this work? Purely for aesthetic reasons...not that anyone ever looks down there!

Another idea - porting the bootliner at the back and clearing some of the sound proofing next to the air vents that sit behind the seats to allow more air (and bass) to flow through? Anyone heard of that working?

Thanks all for your replies?

That's what I did in mine from the start so I don't know what difference it yielded. Top up or down, mine sounds really good, plus no cutting the panels.

asthetics: that's why I hot-glued mesh fabric to the big hole I cut in mine. I still can't see it, but at least I know that if I somehow turn myself into a pretzel I can see a finished product back there. removing sound deadening from the behind-seat vents and porting the bootliner were also done at the same time in my S. Sounds great, and it's a $0 mod.
