Default any reason to buy spoilers?

In the west-coast, I see all these young kids with huge wings on their civics/integrats/s2000s. I was wondering if they know something that I don't. What's the purpose of buying spoilers for the S2000?

Just am info: I am more function over form. I will never autocross my car. I will use my S as a daily driver, that means that I want more stability during the rainy seasons. I will occationally Vtec in the highways.

Does it make sense, then, for my to put spoilers in for safety or performance reasons? Are there better mods out there, that cost the same as a spoiler, but are more effective for stability and performance in wet conditions/high speed stability?

Spring and Shock is a good start for handling. Stock one is good but you can get better. Air Intake also a cheap HP too. All season tires and new set of rim get both look and functions

those huge spoilers the kids put on are for looks and nothing else... most of them are cheap APC spoilers or ebay spoilers that lack the rigidity to have any aerodynamic advantage... so why do they use them? it makes them feel like that 120hp civic they are driving is a race car and they think it looks cool. ahhhh, how many fads and cliches the fast and the furious started...

anyway, dont get one, it serves no purpose other than to rice out your car.

Steamed, converted, or long-grain?

Wings create downforce, which really is useful if you're screaming down the track. Unless you're tracking, though, it's all cosmetics, which is the normal case for most of the cars you see on the road.

I had to ask because, I think those huge spoilers are hideous and screw up the natural lines of the cars. I figure, the only reason to put them on, would be for performance reasons, not for looks. I guess my taste in looks is too old-fashioned to realize that kids put them on for looks.

Anyways, had to ask.

So the concensus is that spoilers do nothing for aerodynamics during daily driving?

Yes, that is correct (unless your daily driving involves the autobahn).

My favorite was seeing a big CF wing on a Civic about two years ago. I asked the owner what the car wasn't doing and what he was trying to accomplish by adding downforce to the rear of his car... He turned to face me and then spoke to me like was a 10 yr old with this comment: "Well it adds downforce... Don't you ever watch auto racing on TV???? I can't put the power down if I don't have it and it makes me faster in the turns". I then went on to explain to the rocket scientist that his car was front wheel drive, and by adding downforce to the rear, all he was doing was introducing drag and to top it off, taking steering AWAY from his car. But hey... When I was 8 yrs old I used to think that new sneakers would help me jump higher too....

Wings are for looks... You want downforce?? Add a venturi tunnel under your car for ground effect.
