Default AP1 or AP2

I've seen these codes used many times in posts.
Does it have something to do with the year?
What is the meaning to these codes?

Thanks in advance

Bas

AP1 means the model years 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. Then the car was changed a little, most notably the redline for the RPMs, from 9k down to 8K, for the 2004, 2005 and 2006. These model years are AP2s. I don't know what AP stands for but I think it may be posted in FAQs some where.

From the Frequently Asked Questions on S2000 Talk:

It's the beginning of your VIN number.

JHMAP1...='00 to '03.

JHMAP2...='04 to '06.

Glad you asked the question. Now I know too.

bas, by the way, you might want to poke through our acronyms thread and see if we missed anything else that you find confusing:

Technically AP1 is all 2.0 cars, including 2004/2005 2.0 liter cars that were sold in other markets.

AP2 is any 2.2L s2k.
