Default Ap1 & AP2

Now I understand the pre 04 cars are designated AP1's
And I know the yanks call their 04 shape cars an AP2's

They all assume anything after 04 is an AP2

I think the AP2 is actually the 2.2 based car

My 04 has AP1 on the VIN plate

So the question I guess is this right?

AP1 - 2.0 (including EUDM +04's)
AP2 - 2.2

Mikey,

Why don't you look at your windscreen?

The answer should be there! (JHMAP.............)

(I understood AP2 referred to all the big-wheelers, because the engine size would be defined by the region code that follows the MY, but I may be wrong!)

There is some help in this listing of VIN by Model year but beware layout only seems to work FOR US MODELS only. It does give some clues about how the VIN is constructed for an S2000 though & AP01 v's AP02 (compare 2003 with 2004) - it's the engine (2.0l versus 2.2l)

Honda Vehicle VIN Identification Information

I think the AP02 is only available in North America.

There is also a question of if the AP02 will turn up in the 2006 model in Europe ???

Are you an economist?

What you say is perfectly accurate, but of absolutely no use in answering Mikey's question!

Would a UK 04/05 owner please state the first part of their VIN, FFS!

Looking at what nervous has linked to and what mikey has already typed I'd have to say I agree with you mikey.

The VIN plate on MY05 shows it to be an AP1. So I'm sure that the 2 litre versions are AP1s and the 2.2 litre engines are AP2s.

That's right:

2.0l = AP1
2.2l = AP2

There are also different designations for the different model years but I can't remember them right now.

Ah, there you have it! I stand corrected!

Depends on the Honda model as to whether the Model code or the model series code depicts the engine type. The former is true here.

JHMAP1 - my car.

It is a variant 1 version 2, but this is coded 13 (this is where trim, engine etc things are usually coded)

Then 01 for the check digit and the (200)1 model year.

Put it all together and you get:

A headache!

I had a PM arguement with a yank about AP1 vs AP2 vs model year. He insisted I was wrong and that ALL 04 cars are AP2's
