boy dreamer.
the 03's had a lot of little changes, because honda realize a lot of people were going to service with the earlier models. Even the early 03's did not have all the wrinkles ironed out until the later 03's.
Wow paying off student loans and dreaming of an S (thats what I am doing!)
g/l!
PS- If you don't mind me asking, are you recently out of school, and if so what are you doing (occupation) that you can ponder the lotus? I'd like to, but the financial calculators tell me "no" unless I want to entertain a six year loan (I'm not).

thanks in advance
MY03 was the only year with no recalls (it did have some repair bulletins) for the AP1 and had the highest consumer reveiws. I dont know about AP2's but I have not heard of any yet.
I have an MY04 AP2 and love it I like the less twitchy rear end. The downside is I cant go to 9000 without some sort of ECU mod.
I do agree with krazyguy316 buying mods before you purchase the car that would make life easier.
Just be careful I know a guy thaht bought a bunch of parts for an S2K then got in an accident in his civic and now he cant afford to insure an S.... That really sucks!

Don't foget to factor insurance into the cost of the car if you haven't done so already.
I entertained a lot of cars in the same price range as the S2000 but was able to eliminate quite a few by checking on insurance quotes. Since it sounds like you just graduated (as did I), my guess is that insuring a Lotus is going to make the cost of ownership pretty pricey.
