Default New owner, blown diff already :(

Hi everyone, I finally decided to join this board after just watching from the sidelines. Got my S in september after having my DC2 stolen this past labor day. I loved the car, and in february I added the inlinepro turbo kit, clutch and all... the works. Reading this forum reminded me of the weakness of the diff, and it finally happened to me. Pinion gear started losing teeth, and the remaining ones all had cracks at the root, and more hairline cracks.. the pinion looked like a mosaic where it didn't break. Before taking it apart, I checked the usual things: backlash, preload, bearing cap flex, etc. etc., and it was all within spec. That tells me the metal pretty much sucks, and I am confident that the new diff I am putting in won't last much longer either. Looked at the inline diff kit, but that was just too pricey for me. I believe that if there was a company out there that made a stock 4.10 out of a much much stronger material, our diffs would not be blowing at the rate they are, but that is highly subjective at this point. Right now I am working on a project to custom fit a ford IRS diff in the S, but I won't share much until the thing is proven, as I am no expert at fabrication, and I don't wanna come across as a preacher without facts. If anyone has tried this before, I'd welcome the feedback. Thanks for having such an informative forum.

Good luck with your project. If you can make it work the turbo guys are going to love you.

Well, all I did with this car was rolls. No digs, no clutch drops, no donuts. Might consider cryogenic treatment and see if it makes a difference next time around.

This is why I only buy sports cars new. Good luck to you. I'm guessing that the previous owner didn't replace the diff fluid and/or does alot of hard acceleration. See hardtopguy for price quote first.
