My question is not whether you should/shouldn't buy one, that is obvious, but whether or not any model year is better than the other. Was the first year it was made a good year in terms of quality etc? Were there recalls etc or lackluster quality the first year it was made that have since been fixed? Thanks

The car gets better and better, but there's been no major changes since its introduction. IMHO there are two reasons why a new S2000 is better (especially when you consider you don't really save that much money when buying used):

1) A new S2K hasn't been neglected or abused (did the previous owner check the oil every fill-up? Did they do standing burnouts every Sat. night? etc.).

2) 36K miles of warranty.

The S2000 feels slow (IMO it feels slow even ripping off 9 grand shifts in burst of 5 . . . . . . . sorry I'm spoilt by my bike), no door pockets, stereo licks, got me 3 speeding tickets ($375 each), go through tires every 3 months, no clock, it's a bitch driving it every day through rush hour getting to and from work . . . . . . . .

But I love my car, the motor, the open air, the motor, the build quality, the motor, the clean design, the motor, the directness of the vehicle, it's an extension of you and it doesn't filter out the feeling of the road. Everything's so tight, even more direct than the new Mini . . . . . . if I won the lottery I'd buy a couple more . . . . . .

I have now owned my S2K for almost 2 months and I can say that the honeymoon has not worn off. I use it for a daily driver putting on close to 100 miles per day. This car has total performance. It drives like a regular car with good gas mileage until you decide to go to WOT and VTEC. As you go thru the gears, it goes like a bat outa' hell and corners like it's on rails. If you're looking for different kind of car...one that puts a smile on your face every time you drive it, than you've found it here. You'll love it.

What kind of mileage are you getting in your daily commute Hi Speedr?

Like most new, clean sheet of paper, cars there were a few problems initially. The number of Tech Serv Bltn's were highest in the initial year it was introduced, MY2000, and every year since the car's been improved and the number of TSB have dropped off to nearly none. I have a MY2001 and have had no problems; however, I'm sure that MY2003 (for example) would even be better. Hope that helps.

dlq04 is correct on the most part. I would just like to substitute the word "issues" for the word "problems". I have a MY '00. I have done none of the TSB's. These are more like "fixes" for things that annoy the owner and not always or necessarily a problem. For example, I've had the clutch buzz since day one and it is still as evident as ever. This, in no way affects the operation of the clutch. The noise does not bother me, so I just left it. Same goes for the plastic window replacement TSB. I've learned how to take care of it and have had no reason to get this done. The 1-2 grind? It's only ever happened when it was clearly my fault, so again, a non-issue.
The only two "recalls" there were for my car was the seat belt retractor and the spark plug thing. I've never had a problem with the seat belt, so I haven't taken the car in. I was lucky enough to have the new spark plugs given to me be a dealer and I did this myself. This was a minor thing for me as I routinely check my plugs to make sure they are secure at all times. For others, this would have been critical.
My point is that though the '00's had more TSB's than any other year, it doesn't necessarily mean they were more troublesome.

I made the plunge and just bought a 01 Spa Yellow. Needless to say, It is the best investment I have made for myself thus far. After a day of hard work, theres nothing like driving top down in this car to get rid of all that stress.
