Default Should I hesitate to buy a CPO 00?

I've been looking for an s2000 for a few weeks. I found a supposedly certified pre owned silverstone/red+black MY00 with very low miles (I say supposedly since its at a used dealer, not a honda dealer). I really really wanted a BB MY02-03 (well any MY but especially black), but the miles on this silverstone are so low, it's hard to pass up. Being still under warranty, I should be able to get all te TSBs fixed no problem if they haven't correct? I will be paying for this car for 5 years, and using it as a daily driver, but it will only be under warranty for another 1 year.

should I hold out for a later MY so I can get a longer warranty, or is the car going to last me forever regardless of MY and miles. thanks

your question would be better answered in the Introductions forum....

Certification only takes place at Honda dealers, highlighter. This user car dealer might or might not do a good job vetting the car, but you cannot count on anything they say as AHM is certainly not backing them up.

Your best bet is to get the car checked out by an independent mechanic (assuming the dealer lets you take it). You want a compression test, and an expert look at all the moving parts.

As for warrantee, I will not advise you on that. To me, warrantee is insurance -- it only depends on whether or not it gives you peace of mind. I'm also hoping that a thread of discussion here in Introductions gets going on warrantees. If you spot anything over in S2000 Talk that we should follow up on, let me know.

Thanks. -- chaz

By the way, your initial question was specifically about MY00... I wouldn't warn you off ANY year of S2000. The change to glass rear window and carpet->vinyl console and some suspension mods took place in 2002, and then another facelift in 2004 and change in engine displacement in the US/Can...

The original cars are truly not significantly different than their successors. A good example of any year car will be wonderful. Plus if you work a great deal on an older model, you can have some cash left over for mods (if you like) and possibly a lower excise tax payment (if your state has such a thing).

There are a few TSBs to look at, and hopefully you can find out what TSB work was done to your car. I think there's a list of TSBs in our Library forum.

Best wishes.

A CPO warranty can only be passed down from an individual. A non-honda dealer can no longer sell waht was once a CPO car as certified. Any car older than '01 as of right now cannot be certified, regardless of miles. So even if that '00 were sitting at a honda Lot, it still wouldn't be a CPO car.

thanks for the input. I will be calling the dealer tomorrow morning to get some details.. If everything checks out (and they come straight about the warranty situation) I will drive the 140 miles to take a look.

btw, the car is a MY00 with under 10k miles the price is listed as $20k, but I will be offering less since I will quote the kbb.com value of $19100 from a dealer (seems to be the price of all 00 S's as I ran a check with 35k miles and it was the same)..
