Noel, I was looking over your notes from the weekend in the video. I wonder if with the stiffer star spec sidewall (sidewall strength, stiffness is essentially a spring...like a sway bar and the spring itself), if the car would be better off with the softer of the sway settings. I could see the RS3 getting sloppy as you drop the front sway (softer sidewall). Might even be worth trying to see if the RS3 would like a little stiffer spring in the front.

Just a thought.

Mike, the tires absolutely act as springs. I am resigned to Dunlops exclusively (trying to sell the nearly brand new RS3s on the new black wheels), but when I ran the RS3s in Dixie, I had to up the rear spring rate by 50 to make the car handle the same..

So what I am really doing is tweaking the balance, but trying not to goo too soft. Right now I have the front sway bar at 4/6 and it feels good, but I feel that I will likely have too much body roll.. so I am going to up the rear rate slightly, and keep the balance by stiffening the front as well.. very slightly of course. This should play better with the camber I have since too much body roll would not help if I lose to much contact patch.
Basically, me and Anthony agree that the car is nearly perfect in balance as is.. so going up in rate by 50 on the rear and keeping the balance via sway in the front I think will be better. Also, that would make my spring split similar to what most others are running (including Jon C, and Nick B when he was in STR)...

Feel free to comment.

In a way I am baffled by the spring rates for STR. Honestly, I feel like we should go softer on the Z and we are already at 750/600. Common knowledge would think R-comps=stiffer springs, but we'll see. The blue Z was softer than mine, and it was better in the slaloms. Both of us use 750/600 and no rear bar (same front bar stiffness, too), but his car had less (and linear) compression in the shocks. His turn in was infinitely better. The main diff being he used more tire pressure and had way more camber. Just the softer compression, higher pressure, and more camber made all the diff in the world.

I'm thinking about sending all (4) shocks out for a rebuild vs just the rears now. If my car can get the blue cars turn in, but otherwise stay the same...it could be extremely fast. I'm not sold on the aero after driving it, though.

Mike,

Well as you know, motion ratios are significant. The S2000 has motion ratios around 0.7 on all corners, so although we run 900/800 commonly, that is equivalent to much less.

Also, of course you would need more camber with softer springs. And shocks are connected as well... so there are so many variables. I am just finally getting the balance (believe it or not) of my car correct. I was too comfortable with an understeering car when fast drivers can do much more with a more neutral car.. so I have to set the car up for max grip and best balance and be smooth enough and confident enough to drive it like I drive my car now.. that will require more finesse, but I'm taking the challenge.

And I'm in fine tuning mode, not major stuff. I did realize at Devens and since that no rear bar works best generally, although some WDCR courses may differ.

So we will see.. I signed up for the Saturday BMW event the following weekend so I can test one setup in the morning and another in the afternoon on the same course with representative grip of locations other than Fedex.

Our M/R is much lower than yours....as result, our wheel rate is low. Keep in mind I have an in-board rear spring...not a coil-over. I don't think I will make an event before toledo, and am planning to make the first big changes in set-up since March. We'll see how it goes.

$10 Discount on Second Slot for Saturday July 14th at Hylton HS, Woodbridge, VA

To help increase interested in this event at Hylton HS in Woodbridge, VA, we are offering the following special.

For anyone paying for a second slot, the second slot will be $10 off. So if you are a member the second slot for a member will only be $20. If the second slot is for a non-member the cost will be $30 (rather than $40).

The second slot can also be used the same driver (e.g. they would drive in two heats) or for a guest.

Remember, to make a second slot, MAKE A SECOND RESERVATION (if the second slot is for a different person, type "Second slot for (type the name of the first slot person)".

-Several people used the second slot for a guest (some that never autocrossed with CDC) -Many participants used the second slot to get 12 runs -Some used the second slot to be a point autocross in the 6 morning runs (since only the first 6 counted for points) then treated the afternoon as a TNT by trading cars with other two slot participants
This offer is only extended for this event at Hylton HS, Woodbridge, VA on Saturday July 14th , 2012.

If you have any questions, let me know at capitaldriving@yahoo.com.

Just saw Brian's private video.. was outdriven and out setup by him. Props to Brian on that.

Doing BMW this Saturday in Waldorf. It has a morning and afternoon session if you register for both, so in between setup changes can be made:
