Thanks Skip

Although I wasn't worried about whether I made the right decision on my new HDTV, this does help.

Yeah, I finally picked one up last weekend. I lucked out on an open box deal for a 57" Hitachi 1080i for $745 with tax. Everything looks incredible compared to my 10 year old Hitachi I just retired to the guest room. By far and away, the XBOX 360 looks the best though. It is very easy to switch the feed type on this TV, so I played a XBOX game at the 400 level (480 ), then 500 level (540 ), then 720, then 1080 and even though there isn't much difference between 720 and 1080 the difference between the lower numbers to the higher is noticeable.

I highly recommend moving up to a HD set if you don't have one.

Drunk Skip: "Do you like hi-def?"

I had a Hitachi once. Loved it. I think the only reason we got rid of it was because some idiot placed unshielded speakers next to it. They were old school behemoths and were being used as furniture, not sound-reproducing items.

The above article also explains why I have not lost anything with being 1080i for the last 6 years. I have never owned an Xbox and mostly watch movies and sporting events. Seating is at its closest now(front row is ~ 9ft/backrow ~15ft) and for only a 50", that's not close enough to get all up in arms about.

Having said that, I am considering getting a 1080p 32" lcd for a future PS3 to be placed in the downstairs bedroom. The beds would come out(or at least the top bunk) to make room for better gaming seating. If I keep the PS3, then I'll want to move semi-quickly on that purchase, but I'd rather wait until after the first of the year before buying another set.

Do they make 1080P for 32" sets yet? I didn't think so.

Once my company is finished with our current project, you'll hopefully see more broadcast HD content in sports What a kick-ass time to be with this company...

I'm tempted to see what my X-Box (standard, not 360) will look like on this screen. At the moment, the clarity is awesome, but I'm still trying to figure out black level issues. The backlight seems to slowly tone down (over about 1 second) on dark scenes and slowly back up once the scene lightens up... it's noticable, but luckily most televison isn't like that. I'm going to post on the AVS forum and see what pople have to say about it. The black levels aren't as sweet on mine as I would have expected given some of the posts. We'll see...

Depends on the type of sports you watch. I think we nearly have the market locked up on NASCAR, golf, yachting, etc. Stadium sports like football, baseball, etc. are already HD because they can have (mostly) stationary cameras, so the investment was much easier at the time.

out of the box, settings are way too high (they call it torch mode on the av forums). use a disc like Avia or Digital Video Essentials to help you out.
