My $.02... forget about Mitsu-shitzy. Been there... done that. They may have improved, but I won't buy one.

The range you're looking in doesn't leave many choices. Pick the one with the nicest cabinet.

Video calibration DVDs. You can borrow my Avia. Since TonyEx already left, maybe I can get it to you some other way.
Yeah... US Mail, or in your case, Flaming Male.

Samsung, Sony and Toshiba all have 50" 720p DLP HDTV's in that price range (right at or slightly above $1500 MSRP) that Best Buy sells. Since you've ruled out Sony, that leaves the Samsung or Toshiba.

also, does anyone have speakers integrated into your ceiling or walls? what kind are you useing?
I would not skimp in this area. Most of the time, such speakers do not have enough area and subsequently use the space in the wall with some kind of baffling integrated.

I really wanted to use such speakers for aesthetic reasons, however, sonically there is a compromise. Since you're building from scratch, you could probably address volumetric issues and adequately use in-wall/ceiling surround speakers.

To that end, I'd recommend(in price order: low-to-higher) Polk, Focal, and Martin Logan. Remember that you will not get nearly as deep a response from in-walls. That being said, you may need to litter the room with a couple little subs versus one main one.

The Focals use the same drivers that are in my Cobalt(now discontinued) bookshelf speakers.

Sony begets Sony, and the only Sony thing I use these days is a spare camera and my Vaio laptop. I've always thought Sony was over-priced compared to its competition in the Home Theatre area.

I am a big Samsung fan though ......yes, I know they share a bit with Sony but they're not over-priced IMO.

I use the XBOX 360 as my DVD player and am running a Yamaha sound system. I think my Cox DVR box is made by either Toshiba or Motorola. If I were using a Sony sound system, and planned to get a PS3, I'd give Sony more consideration.

On top of all that, my parents have two Sony projection TV's, and even though I wouldn't tell them, I'm not impressed with the picture quality under any medium. Aside from some blacks, my TV does a better job with DVD's.

Although JVC does not use DLP, it does come with a stand- something that none of the others offer.

I would not talk to you if you had Sony audio.
