I'd rather have Faroudja than not at all. I'm not familiar with the scalars built into the TVs these days, so that could be why.

Everything should go to the receiver, including the HTPC, then receiver to the TV via its HDMI monitor out. You can use DVI -> HDMI for the HTPC. That's what I have setup.
I take it that I can assign an optical spdif input to a particular HDMI input?

I would say you can't go wrong with the unit for a sub-$500 pricetag. I actually signed up on AVSForum last night.I'll have to see what upscales better although for now I don't have anything to upscale (HTPC can output 1920x1080)... I think I'll be getting a Wii so that would be the one thing.
edit: I'm sure my STB won't do 1080p... my guess is 720p/1080i, right?
