Bill, the Faroudja chip isn't really the greatest at upscaling. Your tv may be better at it. I know mine is better than my 3808. I didn't really see where it does the upscaling to 1080p anyway(may have missed it). It may be a simple passthrough. I believe it said it can convert analog to HDMI.

As for price, if you call 6th Ave on the phone and say you're an AVSforum guy, they most times will go lower on the price. That's how I got my receiver for less than $1k shipped. It currently is on sale on 6th Ave for $1499.

I'm on my second Denon, but only because the first doesn't have HDMI(which isn't really necessary for great sound). The 3300 I have is still rock solid. I would say you can't go wrong with the unit for a sub-$500 pricetag.
It says it does upconversion in the product sheet (up to 1080p, but not necessarily 1080p for all sources / inputs.) True, Faroudja isn't the best, but it's not terrible either. I'd rather have Faroudja than not at all. I'm not familiar with the scalars built into the TVs these days, so that could be why.

Some are crap. some are very good. Mine(Pio Elite) happens to be very good despite being 3yrs old. That is why I was trying to look up his tv.

Everything should go to the receiver, including the HTPC, then receiver to the TV via its HDMI monitor out. You can use DVI -> HDMI for the HTPC. That's what I have setup.
gotcha I take it that I can assign an optical spdif input to a particular HDMI input?

thanks for the 6th av tip, Skip I actually signed up on AVSForum last night.

I'll have to see what upscales better although for now I don't have anything to upscale (HTPC can output 1920x1080)... I think I'll be getting a Wii so that would be the one thing.

edit: I'm sure my STB won't do 1080p... my guess is 720p/1080i, right?

Yes, inputs are assignable these days. They are no longer paired.
