I would stay away from Citrus based cleaners as they tend to stain aluminum and oxidize it .

especially if you have some bling under the hood
I've never had a problem with them. As a matter of fact the P21S Total Car Wash is a citrus solvent.

Maybe the problem occurs if you leave it on too long or don't dilute the cleaner or rinse well?

P21 is probably less aggressive .

Most off the shelf stuff is pretty harsh .

That would explain it then. I dilute what I use.

Yeah, the P21S stuff is pretty mild. As Scott said though, citrus (or any acid type) based cleaners can flash oxidize uncoated metals like aluminum in a heart beat. Best to stay away from these cleaners under the hood.

I didn't think that the P21S Total Auto Wash was that mild. I'm not talking about the car shampoo.

My impression was that the Total Auto Wash was pretty strong. Here is a product description. I'm assuming the Citrus content is probably diluted, but this is a very strong cleaner. It melts the grease in a dirty engine compartment.

P21S High Performance Total Auto Wash - This is probably the most powerful automotive cleaning product on the market today that still offers the famous P21S surface safety. One well known Porsche restoration specialists swears by P21S Auto Wash to get the dirt and grime out of rocker panels, engines and other hard to reach places. This formula is terrific for removing diesel soot and other tough stains that other car wash products just can't seem to cut. Got a wax or grime build up on your paintwork? No problem. This stuff's got the horsepower to cut the mustard. Where does all the power come from? The P21S detergent formula, plus the addition of a powerful citrus solvent add up to unmatched cleaning power.

But, I'll take your advice and not dilute citrus cleaners in the future.
