Some brands of PC have onboard amplifers and provided speaker level output. I had a Compaq Presario a long time ago that did this.
I upgraded my PC a few years ago. Like you, I intended to use the old montior and speakers from my Compaq. I had the same volume problem and discovered I needed powered/amplified speakers.
I bought a nice set of Labtec speakers for around 40.00 and they work great.

The monitor is now the only thing I didn't replace (and I'm going to watch for a sale). I picked up cheapie speakers today, for like $20.00, gotta save SOME $ towards the "S" pods!
All is well once again in computer land!
