Make sure you buy cycling shorts with the cushion on the a$$ and crotch... you'll thank me later after riding...

LOL I tried that once and it felt like I was wearing adult diapers! I managed to avoid wearing them since MTB'ing requires you spend alot of time OFF the seat. oh man .. a sore ass does not make a fun ride ... NO HOMO

Also, another benefit to the shorts is that since they are tight, they compress onto the muscles of your legs, which also feels good.
Oh... also buy a cyclometer for mileage, time, max, average, etc. They're fairly cheap too. I have a Cateye that I bought for $50 back in 2006, which is wireless. They have newer stuff, but still for the same price. There's also more expensive ones that show Cadence and Heart Rate, but that's just personal preference.

I hear you... and even with the shorts after riding for 4 hours, it starts to hurt anyway.

Its funny but many people dont know how involved cycling can be.
I was teaching my girl how to shift gears properly and body positioning. The poor girl was not shifting and killing herself uphills. Its hilarious when people say "I know how to ride a bike" and then when you take them out they get so discouraged and never bike again just because they had such a difficult time. After showing her how to shift and climb, she was all about zipping around the park. Man I cant wait to get my road bike ... I NEED SPEED!!!

It really is an amazing sport that has many tactics and techniques, and also forgot to mention, it is all out brutal when it comes to physical demands from the body. The amount of pain and such that we go through, but I don't know what it is, I just keep going back to it for more
I read an article somewhere about how cycling relieves that mind of people's everyday problems and stress cause honestly, if you are riding seriously, there really is no room to think about anything else. You're thinking about riding position, power exersion, traffic, current route, etc... it's great... haha. It's a way of taking your body out of the everyday routines of life.

Definitely. Or you get the people that say something like... "You spent how much on that bike?... and it doesn't come with a motor?"...

My favorite tactic to use is sneak up on your buddy while he is struggling and reach over and squeeze his brakes
they totaly loose all momentum and want to kill you
Biking is really more than a sport .. its a passion for me. I just need to get back on the trails and come spring, Im hoping to pull out my very first road bike.

Do it man... get a bike. I've actually been looking up some used bikes and you can find some really good stuff for pretty cheap. Most of them all you have to do is clean them up a bit, and you pretty much have a new bike. Might have some minor scratches here or there, but with any road bike, it's expected.

I am going to go new. I believe in keeping my local mom and pop bike shop in biz. The guy that owns it is a real great guy and before he is a business man he is a cyclist. Real down to earth guy and I spend hours shootin the $hit with him about ridding. He has a descent specialized bike for me to start with. I will put it on lay away and take it out in the spring. End of summer and fall is great for mtn biking. You can gear up nicely with out burning up in the heat.
