Back in the day I bought the largest picture tube Hitachi I could find 36". NEVER a problem 17 years later.

Hitachi > Sony IMHO.

I would go w/ a Sony Grand WEGA XBR2 60" LCOS Projection TV (online of course), but at $2700 it's more than you're looking to spend?. Best PQ for the money IMO. Certainly nicer picture than a quality DLP, and much less than expensive plasmas.
