Id recommend a 50" Pioneer or Panasonic plasma commercial monitor. Both are $2000.
but don't you have to pay for specific "boards" over and above the price of the monitor?
'monitors' won't have HD tv tuners. Some people find these necessary since they don't always want to rely on an HD cable/satellite box.
Choice of TV totally depends on how much you want to spend and what you plan on using it for. If you're only going to watch 720p/1080i content from a cable box/satellite, you would probably benefit from buying a nicer 720p TV as a 1080p won't give you much more for the money. If you want to spend $2k on that set, those plasmas are great (probably the best) choices.. the picture will be excellent. If you want to spend closer to $1000, you can pick up a nice 720p DLP (just be weary of rainbow on older DLPs). I would steer clear of 720p LCD TVs larger than 42". Not sure now much the 1st gen sony XBR1 LCoS projection sets are selling for now, but if the price was right, I would certainly pick one of these over a DLP (these actually display 1920x1080, but only accept 720p input and scale it up).. of course, I would get a NICE plasma over both (like those listed before).
If you want to future proof a little more, or have a need to display 1080p content now, whether scaled up or from a true 1080p HD source such as PS3, HD-DVD, etc, then you would certainly be better off picking up a 1080p set. You will welcome the added resolution..e.g. I would take a $3000 1080p set over a $3k 720p set any day. but this limits you in selection since the prices will be higher. $1500-2k will get you a pretty nice 1080p Samsung DLP. For $2700 you can get a 60" sony LCoS projection set (my choice in this size at a decent price). 50"+ 1080p LCD and plasma sets are pretty expensive. I would expect to pay $3500+ at least for a nice (ie sony) 50"+ 1080p LCD.. even more for a plasma.
All of that assuming you don't want to go smaller than 50".

Get it at costco, and you wouldn't need to buy protection plans.
But even so, I'd still get it there if possible.
i've heard good things about the samsung 1080p dlp's. but why don't you just go for broke and get a sony bravia xbr lcd? i did... and i love it! best buy will give you 0% financing until 2010! that's plenty of time to pay it off...

I'd take the cash over financing.
