Am I screwed???
Sup everyone,
This has nothing to do with the s2000, but...I had to post here because I don't know what to do. O yeah, sorry it's so long. Here's the situation:
I have a 96 Toyota Camry. I had one of those major services when your car's odo turns 90,000. It started off at 250$ but they kept on adding to the price, because I needed to replace other parts. In total I had to pay around 2000$ for parts and service. The most expensive part was the catalytic converter. They said it was below efficiency and that it was the reason why my engine light was on. They quoted me at over 1000$ for parts and labor for just the cat. Well, i found a vendor on the internet that sells that part for 600$ so decided to get it from the internet and have them install it.
Anyways, I ordered that part and received it and it was sitting in my room for a month cuz I couldn't get around to having time to install it...mainly because it's my only car for now. So after a month and 10 days I get a day when I don't need my car and then get off my ass to get it installed. The dealer told me that i've got the wrong part. They told me the right part number and I was sure I could just return my cat to get the new part from the place I got it from the internet. Turns out that I can't return it because they have a 30 days only refund policy.
Now I get mad because I'm going to be (or already am) out ~600$. Turns out the cost of the right part and installation is around 500$ (quoted from the dealer). I call the dealer and tell them to buy back my catalytic converter because they told me the wrong info.
My argument was, you told me I needed that cat and quoted me for a $1000 and now you tell me it's the wrong one and quote me a $500 for this new part I need. It was because of you I got the wrong part. Please reimburse me.
Their argument was, You never asked for the specific part number and bought it just by looking at the price. Then they said sorry, "I really feel for you" and said they couldn't buy it back because it was my error.
Am I screwed here? The primary cat ( what i really need ) costs 500$ for parts and labor (200 for just the part). and the secondary cat (what i have still sitting in my room) costs 1000$ for parts and labor. Isn't it common sense to assume the more expensive one was what they suggested? There's only those two types of cats in my car.
Please help. I am so frustrated, and feeling stupid for not knowing better. It also doesn't help that I am young, because I don't think they're taking me seriously.
What should I do?
BTW, if you have a Toyota, don't get it serviced at Northridge Toyota. Their service dept sucks ...

You might want to check your warranty on the catalytic converter. It is a special warr. that is usually not spelled out in the manual. They have to have a warr. on it and it is quite a long term one. I dont know how long but long. Just something to find out.
Take a tip from this thread and sell your secondary cat on Ebay:

...you should have no problem selling it

I checked the warranty info and there is in fact a warranty but it is only a warranty for defective parts...
I called Toyota's company customer service line and they suggested I speak with their customer relations person?
I am so frustrated..
anyone else? please help

I just talked to the the service guy and the service manager.
the service guy kept on saying I acted on assumption so he can not be at fault for it. Which is true, but i still can't beleive he would be off the mark for $500.
the service manager was no help. He completely did not want to help. He said that I and the service guy had differing stories and seemed to be going with whatever the service guy said.
Seems like they're saying everything right to avoid a potential lawsuit. They keep on repeating the same thing over and over, and totally disregards what I say. Maybe they're trained for this ??
I never even thought about sueing too.. all i want is my money.
any suggestions?
