Any audiophiles here?

I'm not completely sold on B&O. I'm not denying that they sell equipment that sounds great to the average consumer. And it all looks AMAZING. But IMHO, I think their primary target is the offices of corporate CEOs, and the penthouses of the rich and famous. They have built a name for themselves among the ranks of Chanel and Gucci. They are very marketable, and as so, their equipment doesn't have to compete with other high end companies who have are on the cutting edge of audio technology.

I've only heard a few of their floor standing loudspeakers and headphones, and I wasn't very impressed. Their equipment is overpriced for what it is, and there is nothing I hate more than feeling like I'm paying for a name. I'd sooner have equipment from a number of other manufacturers for less money. I'd like the opportunity to try a few more of their products so I can make a solid decision.

However, he was bashing EXTREMELY high end equipment... then hyping up the quality of his Sony amp, which is an outdated, very mainstream, off the shelf piece of equipment that is comparable to what you might find in a HTiB today. It was a very inconsistent argument, so I felt the need to point out where the flaws in his logic were.
You are doing it again.

As far as home headphones go, give Grado a shot. Very neutral and well matched side to side (at least above a certain price point). They remind me of my B&Ws.

I'm not that into ear buds. I own a set of Shure. I hear good things about the Etymotic line though but have no experience with them.

Well to the experts... just what would you put into an S2000 without spending over 5 grand. This is basically what YOU would put in an S2000 under these conditions:

1) Headunit, No CD player just IPOD
2) 4 speakers
3) NO SUBWOOFER
4) an amp if needed

must have moderate bass and crystal clear sound to that of a pin drop.

How would you proceed?
What brands would you use?
What connections would you use? Fiber, RCA, etc.

I'm not an audiophile or an expert, just trying to get engineering prowess of the people behind the thread.

Car audio is definitely not my forte. The interior of the S2000 is hardly acoustically ideal. I didn't bother upgrading the system beyond some nice mid-range drivers in the doors, tweeters mounted on the windshield pillars, and a head unit that didn't look too "bling bling" (which was actually hard to find!).

While I don't know enough about car audio to suggest individual components, I will say that some of your requirements aren't necessarily clear.

Headunit: Do they even make a headunit that doesn't play CD's? Not as far as I know.

4 Speakers: What type? Are you referring to 2 mid-range drivers and 2 tweeters (which would be common with the S2000). If you are talking about 2 individual sets of mid-range drivers and tweeters, that will prove slightly more difficult since there is limited space to mount them.

No subwoofer: I don't get the reasoning behind this one, and I'll explain below.

Amp: To get the most out of your speakers you will need an amp. The headunit isn't going to put out enough power to drive the speakers like they should be driven.

"must have moderate bass and crystal clear sound to that of a pin drop": I'll start with "moderate bass".... basically, it isn't going to happen. Bass comes from low frequency drivers (i.e. SUBWOOFERS!) Mid range drivers are not meant to cover low (bass) frequencies, so you will not get the "moderate bass" you're looking for without a subwoofer. I don't know what your objection to a subwoofer is, but they are necessary for a full range of sound. And the crystal clear sound you seek is going to prove difficult. That is a subjective term. My idea of crystal clear sound is nearly impossible to accomplish in most living rooms, much less the less-than-ideal interior of a convertible car.

And lastly, I was unaware that fiber is being used in car audio... but then again, I know next to nothing about car audio. When I think of car audio I see images of rappers with "15's" filling the trunk space of their hummers and escalades. Disgraceful.
