Any audiophiles here?
How do you feel about Klipsch speakers? I'll be building a 7.1 home theater system for my basement and my friend gets a huge discount on Kilpsch speakers. Would it be worth my while? I can spend about ~1500 dollars for a full 7.1 system worth of speakers.
I really like hi-fi stuff, but I'm on too big of a budget right now...plus I live in an apartment.
once I get my house though...it's on
well at least for midrange stuff.
I've been a head-fi member for a while though. right now I'm using a pair of ety er6i's with a mini^3 amp through a homemade ipod LOD. god enough for me for now

Before you make any decisions, I suggest you look into a few other brands in the same price/performance range at Klipsch. Namely, I have had great experienced with SpeakerCraft; particularly their in-wall home theater lines. They have been in the business since the mid 70's and they make some great stuff. They also offer lifetime warranties on their products.
Some people shy away from the in-wall/in-ceiling speakers, but they have really come a long way in the last few years. I think in-wall speakers are a great value for the level of performance that they offer. They are a great way to save space, and the installations look very CLEAN.
Martin Logan's in-wall series is also FANTASTIC, but it is slightly more pricey than the SpeakerCrafy and Klipsch lines. The Martin Logan stuff is simply beautiful though. You can really see the attention to detail in their work. You can't go wrong either way.
I would suggest that you save your $1500 and build up a bit more of a budget. $1500 could get you the speakers if you shop around, but it wouldn't provide for a receiver, or any type of media player, etc...
If you need any more advice on you home theater system, please feel free to PM me. I would be happy to help.

I was a dealer for Kilpsch when I was in the business. Not because I really cared for anything they manufactured, but because it was requested more often than any other speaker. Klipsch is a popular brand with a great reputation. As far as the average consumer goes, Klipsch will probably satisfy your itch. It isn't what I would choose in my home theater, but I think you will be very happy with them.

Just wondering if I'm the only audiophile around here. Audio has been a hobby of mine for quite some time now. I used to design and build home theaters, so I've been around high end audio equipment for a long time. I'm no longer in that business, but I still keep current on all the latest equipment and technology. I still buy/sell/trade all types of equipment, and I enjoy talking about all things audio. I've recently been researching high end headphones for home and travel.
I'd like to discuss some of this stuff with like minded individuals... those who actually know what the hell they're talking about. You know, those individuals who have knowledge of audio beyond "Yeah, so Bose makes some great stuff!".... because we all know what a crock of crap that is.

+1 for SpeakerCraft.
-1 for Martin Logan - you can do better with the Magnepan MC1/CC3 set for way less money. While not truly in-wall, they're thin enough you can hide and mount them pretty stealthily. For planar speakers, the MLs don't even touch the Maggies. Buy a pair of MMGs and be surprised. . .even at $600.

I suggested these two companies because I have experienced great support from both, unlike many other manufacturers I have worked with. SpeakerCraft used to have a terrible reputation as far as support goes, but I must say that they have stepped up their game recently. I've had phenomenal experience with ML as well. Their equipment is just B-E-A-utiful. One of my customers complained about pin-tip sized dents in his brand new ML 5" cones, so I called them up to have them replaced. Martin Logan send replacements out with 2-day shipping... and they told me to just keep the original cones! So I got to keep the originals for my own use.
I will also say that as far as in-wall speakers go, the Martin Logans I have installed are the most impressive. They sound like they are free standing.
What I don't get is that some of my customers wanted to drop thousands on expensive in-wall speakers, but when it came time to install them they never wanted to treat the walls! I tried to explain how counterintuitive it was, but they just didn't seem to care. Go figure.
the sonics are just bad in my house, so i havent bothered with the high end speakers, and usually when im listening to speakers im not standing in one spot anyways. when i do stand in one spot, ive got my grados or sennheisers on. my home sennheisers (hd595) are open aural, and my travel sennheisers (hd280 pro) are closed, and can run fine off a portable cd player or portable headphone amp..... inner ear monitors sound great but having something sit that close to my ear drum scares me a little.
p.s. this did inspire me to take a stab at building my own cmoy again....
