Personal preference is the Sig Sauer. You just can't beat a P229. You can get it chambered in either .40 or .357SIG. And whichever one you don't get, you can always get a drop-in barrel for the other caliber.
I also had an HK 9MM Compact. I shot the .45 version of this at the range and it simply wasn't a good fit for me. I am not huge fan of the 9MM cartridge, but I would rather have something I am comfortable with, than something with more stopping power. I was able to carry both with an IWB Holster and both were comfortable.
The most important thing is to try and put some rounds through whatever you are going to buy. Try to find a range that has rentals and just rent one.
The Sig was perfect to me, I loved that handgun. Looking to purchase another one very soon. I do feel though, everytime I handle a Glock, that there is something of an indestructible feeling to them. And I admire that.
I've shot the 36 and that is a nice compact cannon. I like the single stack mag even though it only holds 6 rounds. You can't go wrong with either a Glock or a Sig whichever you choose.

aren't those the ones the FBI carries?
Yep, and they're my favorite too. Honestly, after shooting HKs and Sigs, I never wanted a Glock. Glocks just don't feel right in my hand. Glock triggers also don't feel right. However, they work and fit great for others. The best thing to do is to try all of them out multiple times.
Well, I ended up opting for the g36 after holding both the 30 and the 36 at the store. I ordered a new one last Saturday and it arrived on Wednesday due to the weekend and holiday on Monday. I am going to take it to the range tomorrow to see how she shoots and break her in a bit. I got a box of Federal 238grain hydrashocks for carry and a few boxes of ball ammo to practice with. I had also ordered a DeSantis "tuck this" IWB holster which is more comfortable than any IWB I have ever used. Very secure and keeps the weapon in good position no matter what position you are in.
some gun store will let you rent. My first gun was a SW99 40 never got used to it
took a year to sell. I've gone to the 1911 love it. Took a friend shooting he went out and bought a 1911 also
