Any gun nuts here?

In my experience, penetration is needed to drop a target. The surface impact of the 9mm does little to stop an attacker instantly like the heavier 45 or the faster 357 rounds.
Here's a quote from the FBI report though.

Also one of the best revolver bullets was the .357mag. Out of a 4" barrel and 125gr it was 1400-1450fps. Except most of those that carried it did so with much shorter barrels (semi-auto barrels include the chamber, so a 4" rev is not equal to a 4" semi-auto). When you observe guns that were actually carried it was more like 1250fps and 125gr. Or 9mm (124gr@1250fps +p). 9mm sucks...but .357mag is good? So much about guns is about perception and not facts.
9mm has a bad rep because they went to really light rounds that didn't penetrate or heavy rounds that wouldn't open. Ayoob says in another article that 115gr reg. or +p is good for shorter barrels (115gr federal is a lawman classic 9mm round). If you have a full sized pistol, 124gr better IMHO. My 115gr are 1250fps out of my shorter barrel.

No problem. I don't have all the answers, but I have spent a lot of time reading. You have to go with that you like, but do so only once you have a logical reason for doing so.

Gunderwood, that's some great info. It's really going to make me look harder at what I keep in my weapon for self-defense. Of course I just pump through Winchester for the range, but I like to keep some more effective ammo in the clips when it's stored away at home.
Obviously I've never been in a situation where I needed to fire upon someone to stop an attack, but just out of curiosity... most of your post talks about creating enough blood loss to stop an intruder. Doesn

The problem with pain is it is relative. Some people can tolerate an immense amount of pain and still perform. Mix in a psychotic personality or someone on drugs and you don't know what pain they'll tolerate. What a human body can't tolerate is a huge drop in blood pressure and volume.
