The oral surgeon who removed my wisdom teeth ( a few years previous to this incident) was sued by a woman because she lost all feeling in her tongue and was unable to taste anything. To prove to the court that she had no feeling in her tongue, she had a needle stuck through her tongue while she was on the stand. Apparently, she wasn't warned of the possible side effects of having ones wisdom teeth removed. She won her case.
I never had any problems with mine though and I remember him telling me of what may happen with the nerves in the mouth. My preparation for the operation was to imagine getting hit on the side of the face with a baseball bat. As it turned out, it wasn't that bad.
Paresthesia as it is called can happen with the lower wisdom teeth removal. It usually comes back within a few weeks or a couple of months. It is a permanent/semi permanent numbing of the affected side of the face caused buy damage to the nerve that sometimes runs less than 1mm away from the root tip of lower wisdom teeth. The sensation of taste to the tongue is from another nerve not the trigeminal therefore the patient was probably lying about the taste part. Also it usually happens to one side of the mouth not both. It is rare but can happen if the roots of the wisdom teeth are very close to the nerve. I always warn my patients of the risks and they sign a consent form before they come in the room. I have one that needs to be pulled myself but I can't let myself go through with it.

Had mine out twelve days ago. Still recovering, however, i'm 18 and because they removed four, they put me to sleep. woke up on drugs and stayed that way for a couple days. The percocets help a lot, half a tab works for me, 6'00" 215lbs. big guy, these things did the trick, towards the end of day nine i was off perks, and on 800mg's of IBProfen. I had one tooth that was harder to extract, so theres still pain there. All the other sockets are fine, back to normal with occational teeth shifting, causing aches. I was in class the day after surgery, on drugs, but there for my final reviews. OH and, some things to know, the dissolving stiches, feel WEIRD coming out, they dissolve, but kinda fall into your mouth, you end up eating them, yum. Also ICE works, theres muscle soreness everywhere that you can't feel with the drugs, without, you notice them and they hurt. Men, when you go for surgery, expect not to use a conventional razor for a couple days, the drugs numb the receptors we use to shave, everything get's funky. GOOD LUCK

well,

My surgery was in the early spring so I remember it vividly. I went to the surgeon, and he gave me two needles one for I.V. the other for anestesia, and then they gave me a gas mask over my nose. So they said I was about to be sleepy, and I started LAUGHING MY ASS OFF!! and then, my head hit the headrest out cold in the middle of my laugh(LOL).

Later, I woke up with my mouth FULL of gaws and my lips were deep red with blood. At this time I was still 98% unconcious, and my dad said that I was in the operating room for about 40 minutes asking the surgeon the same, slurred, uncomprehensable quesstions over and over again. :-D

Later, when I regained more of myself, they said that my wisdom teeth had already been grown in but underneath the surface. So they had to do extensive surgery and break 2 of the wisdom teeth so they could come out, and not mess with any of my ortho treatment.

For the rest of that day, I spurted blood all over my shirt and I had the Codeine to take and some antibiotics, and for extreme pain, some tranquilizers:-).

I took 2 Codeine that day, and it felt like the best day of my life, but I looked like hell, and I slept for about 14 hours .

It took me about 2 weeks to heal, beacuse I have 4 HUGE gaping holes in the back of my mouth and I could only consume Boost for the first week and clean the caverns in my mouth with this manual ater pick serenge thing.

Also, you get a LOT of sympathy points from girls, so don't forget to tell them about your surgery and get them to come and do things for you while you're too weak to get up;-)

They were good times, and Codeine was my friend.

I had all of my wisdom teeth pulled a few years ago and they had to take 3 other teeth that were damaged by my wisdom teeth coming in. Before the surgery I was in horrific pain and got major headaches.

A quick poke in the arm for the anesthetic, I took a nap, woke up with no pain and a mouth full of gauze. The only interesting part was the nurse and my fiance' in the room when I woke up and the nurse asked if I wanted anything. I told her a beer and a BJ I told them I didn't care who got me the beer but I wanted both of them (fiance' and nurse) to take turns for the BJ. My fiance was horrified but the nurse just laughed and commented "Oh yea, we hear all kinds of weird $#@! when people come down from the anesthetic. That was pretty tame compared to some of what I get asked."

Then I went home and slept for 17 hours straight. Never had pain, dry socket or any kinds of problems. 3 days later the stitches came out and I was as good as new.

omfg, that is funny

with mine the guy said count to ten as he gave me the anastesia, by the time I got to ten he said we were already done. as far as the pain, on the second day, I had to take some pain pills. I have broken alot of bones, I mean alot, surgery etc and have never taken any pain pills because they make me puke. I had to take them for two days for the teeth

I had mine removed while in basic training for the Navy. I got to stay in bed for a couple of days while everybody had to go out and do physical training. The other good thing was that it was free and they did a great job, no pain.

I am very lucky.

I only had one wisdom tooth. It started to rot so I had to get it taken out.

They only had to use some local anesthetetic to take it out. They did have to lean on it pretty good though because it was well anchored.

When the novocaine wore off I felt no pain.

The whole experience was painless.
I have staraight teeth too.
