I'm not a computer person, so I'm not sure what 'safe-mode' is. it says to back up my registry - what's that? I feel lost lol.

This seems to describe Alex's problem (and offer a few solutions, as well):

As for your computer, Jill, I think I've helped a friend with a similar problem in the past. I'd suggest getting one of your friends who knows Windows to help get rid of those pesky programs. I don't even remember what I had to do to fix my friend's computer, just that it took a couple of hours, and was a major PITA.

to virus/adware/etc writers.

Peace is right Zgirl, if you're not too sure what you're doing it would be best to get someone to help you with it. Safe mode just runs the bare essentials and doesn't allow networking unless you select it. That will prevent the virus program from activating and allow it to be deleted. If your AV program picks up a virus but says that it cant delete it, restart your pc and hold down the F8 key and once set it will prompt you to select to start in safe mode. Then run your AV again and it may work.

Get a friend to show you how to use regedit because if I miss something and you stuff it then you're up shit creek

I had this also. I think my wife got it on the computer. It took me 2 weeks to clean it off. Nothing contemporary works. I ended up investigating it on the web and finally found a program designed by a guy that cleared it up. This one is dam tough! It totally randomizes its dll and you cannot get ride of it. In my 20 years in computers, this was the worst one I have ever seen. I
