For a more credible source the Humane Society lists Pits and Rottweilers (Doesn't separate the two) as accounts for over half of the fatal attacks in the US. It also goes on to say that it is debatable that it is due to breed more than training, but still proves my point that there is a good reason to believe that these dogs are more likely to be dangerous/aggressive.

No, I wouldn't mind having one though as I think they're cool dogs. Actually I have a chow mix which was listed just behind pits and rottweilers as the most aggressive/dangerous. My point isn't that they're bad pets, just that if I was a cop bursting through someone's door and had one running at me, my first reaction wouldn't be "Hey he wants to play." When you're dealing with someone that you would assume is hardcore enough justify a raid like that then they're likely to have some kind of guard animal. The last thing you need is a dog biting your arm while someone comes around the corner with a gun pointed at you.

Honestly I think everyone is entitled to their opinion, even if that differs from statistics but when some douche that thinks he knows everything hops on here and tells me I'm ignorant for calling pits aggressive and assumes he knows all about me and my friends I wanted to defend my point, especially when statistics are on my side.

(For the record Chris@NLM, you are not that douche and I have no problem with you. In fact I appreciate you discussing this as opposed to automatically going on the offense about how I don't know anything.)

If pitbulls aren't aggressive then why is it that most apartments don't allow them and some vet's wont even see them?

I agree that pitbulls aren't inherently bad but most people that own them have them for that "tough image" and lots of people have them and treat them badly. I had a friend that had one, treated it very well and was never aggressive towards it and it still constantly bit people when they came over and he had to get rid of it because it hurt his kids a few times. Nothing major, but it would still draw blood unprovoked.
I had a pit jump out of a moving car and run a block to try to kill my dog when we were out for a walk.

The owner said, "Please don't call the cops, its a two strike dog." Yeah sure, right after I have to fight the crazy thing off to keep it from killing my dog.

I don't care if people want pits, but if they take an aggressive step toward me, don't think its going to come back to you still breathing because I am not taking any chances. Keep it on a leash, or in your yard of inside you car if it is too psycho to not jump out the window and attack something for no reason. If it runs after someone showing its teeth, don't expect somebody to give it the benefit of the doubt. I think that applies to the cops in this case, but the corgi I don't get.

Another aspect of the "Pit Bulls are dangerous" argument that bothers me is that so many people lump so many dogs into this category. American Pit Bull Terriers, Am Staffs, etc etc. I have a brindle boxer that many people have mistaken for a pit bull from a distance, and for some reason they are magically less weary of him when I tell them he is a Boxer.

Any large, powerful animal is dangerous if not handled properly.

My point isn't about the dog, it is that if you're a cop busting in to someone's house and you see a dog that is known to often be bred and trained to be aggressive you're not going to wait for it to bite you, when he starts coming at you in what seems to be an aggressive manner he needs to be put down.
Still, that's complete BS. My dog (who is possibly part pit bull) goes to the door and lets out a low growl anytime someone knocks on the door. Not because she wants to bite or hurt the person, because she feels that she is protecting her house and myself.

Any respectable dog is going to run towards the door and bark/growl if a group of people bust through screaming and yelling. That's the nature of a dog, they are protective.

I think at this point we could say the cops would have shot any dog pit or not. They did shoot corgi right? All i am saying that any dog can be aggressive. I just don't want people to assume all pits are bad dogs. That would be like saying the whole human race must be all pos because they kill people all the time lol

Agreed, but at the same time you can say certain groups of people (IE gang members) are more likely to kill and be aggressive. Hell, you can generalize that men are more aggressive than women.

Pits aren't bad dogs, but as someone else pointed out I doubt a Chihuahua would have gotten shot for the same thing. I mean my chow mix is the sweetest dog ever, but I imagine she would have gotten shot for the same thing if someone busted in to my place.

Yes, but there is a difference between barking and growling and doing that while they charge at you. I'm not saying the dog was wrong, but if I'm that cop and I see any big dog running at me and I see it as aggressive, it's going down. The last thing I need is a dog clamping on my arm when someone comes around a corner with a gun to shoot me, which is in the back of all these guys mind's if they're geared up like that.
